Let's say I have a large planar woofer, rectangular in shape. I have set tension on one axis much higher than tension on the other axis. What, exactly, would that do?

I think it is good to have a distributed resonant behavoiur, not a single resonance. There is a description in one of the patents of Jim Winey (Magnepan) of how it can be done. The lower the tension, the lower the frequency and the larger the amplitude.
