It's a good concern. We see examples all the time of laser misuse. I think one thing that makes this application inherently safer than many others is the fact that you'd want to mount the thing (as I do) such that chances of someone passing through the beam are minimal or zero, if only since when the beam is broken your music is also.
Update: My original laser module has finally failed after about 2 years and (my guess) a minimum of 2000 hours of operation, all while running 192k sample rate. Thus, the durability test is over and I have changed to a more user-friendly 96k. Repair was effected in about half an hour by replacing the module with an identical ($1) module. I believe I can declare success 🙂
