This Audax 5.25" looks good for a mid?

Hi

Saw this Audax 5.25" HT130FO over at Madisound:

How about it for a mid in a 3-way crossing at 300 and 3000?

Here's the response:

Looks nice and flat from 100 to 5000 with a delicious rolloff below 100hz.

Two things:

Let's say I'm rolling off the high end with a 2nd order, I'm gonna have to kill that bump starting after 5000hz, right.

And, with that nice rolloff below 100hz could I get away with just a 1st order there?

Thanks.

That´s an old one.

I found it in Audaxes " oldies but goodies " section:http://www.audax.com/products/oldies.html

I wouldn´t put my trust very seriously in that ancient scanned response graph. It looks a little too good to be true and its only on axis or is it a power response?

On the other hand; how much driver can you get for $ 16.50?
You will probably get more than 20 bucks of music out of the little sucker anyway.

Go for it! 🙂

Gee, I can't see the HT130F0 on the oldies page. I can see the HT130A0 but the specs and the cone material are quite different. Besides, the HT130F0 is still listed on the Audax current main products list and $16.50 is Madisound's sale price--I have no idea what it's original retail was.

And as for the response graph, it looks like SPL by frequency, on axis and 30deg off, as well as impedance.

Anyone else?

FWIW I helped someone with an HT monitor design using this driver some years ago and according to him it needed to be XO'd at 2.2kHz/2nd order due to its strong breakup modes to sound worth a toot. To extend it beyond this will require some cone damping experimentation. Electrical filters are no way to deal with this type of problem IMO.

Don't let the low end response fool you, this plot appears to have been measured on a 165cm wide x 135cm IEC open baffle. That said, it can be stretched down low enough to XO to a sub in a pipe, though two are required to compensate for baffle step.

HTH,
