Right, so these are relatively safe.
It's the big (25uF or bigger) shunt caps getting replaced, such as the 2nd pole on the woofer LP filter. 🙂 Makes a significant difference in speaker impedance and phase matching.
Best,
E

Thanks all. Im not going to take any chances. Thiel says the NPEs should still be good. Still looking into the polys though.
I have been experimenting with Thiels for 17 years and have a wealth of findings. First and foremost is the realization that the caps Jim used are complete garbage! Regardless of the film foil construction they are not wound tightly, squeeze one and see how spongy they are. Better yet pull a pair of the 1uf caps and put them in a preamp input as a coupling cap. Unlistenable upper ranges but also extremely dynamic to a point of harshness. This is where Thiel got the bad rap from those **** caps, he probably saved a ton by buying them in bulk but doomed his creations with his choice. Unfortunately caps take a long time to burn and testing numerous caps takes a very long time and lots of frustration. They also used the Vifa D26 which was an OK tweeter but had a compromised damping implementation. I have developed a replacement that is Beryllium with custom machined plates. HUGE improvement with better caps. Actually my CS5i's with the mods are unbelievable although they are modded to be bi amped with integrated ICEPOWER amps on the subs which cured the ultra low impedance issues.
New caps are vital to the Thiel speakers. If there is enough interest I am going to start to market the tweeters. I started a web page to document the path to glory with the Thiel speaker. Resurrection Audio

Hi Jim, I have recently bought some CS 2.2, what was the resistor that Theil say needs updating?Spoke with Thiel. Electrolytics shouldnt be an issue at this point. They are sending a new resistor that needs updating. I guess film caps are still fair game. I'll look into options. Current recommendations are very expensive. Thanks
