The finite is the reality as the alternative has not happened and NEVER will ( discuss ) .
Well,
If the universe appeared in its entirety at “one point” (one immensely compact infinitely small point) and expanded..then it must have an end farthest point..
The above is S. Hawking’s idea that in quantum mechanics very small things just appear…the trouble is they also just disappear<< how “big” is “small” compared in the size of the universe?
However, the fact that we may be locked into it and cannot escape it like walking on a loop of paper or the inside of a sphere does not change the fact that there would be another side we just can’t see it…ie to us it’s not real.
The problem then is what is beyond that..or as many people ask,”what is the universe expanding into?”. The get out is another dimension<<< string theory seems to say there are eleven dimensions..that is also hard to visualise.

M. Gregg
Just playing..
The universe is expanding….so how do we know that after it has expanded for long enough and there is a vast emptiness that it won’t appear again?
Ie not the end by contraction…a sort of big bang then expansion, then another big bang..then expansion..(an ever expanding universe?)

M. Gregg

Just playing also . I speculated that the missing antimatter is causing the universe to expand . Therefore it is at the boundaries of the imaginable .
I love the idea that the universe is magnolia in coulour if seen from afar .
A few friends got together. None of them knew much about maths, physics or theology so they decided it would be fun to publicly discuss their misconceptions about Creation, black holes, nucleosynthesis and the meaning of infinity.
Those onlookers who know a bit about one or more of those subjects decided to let them have their fun. It would take far too long to explain the maths and physics (a few years, probably) and to explain the theology would invite interest from the Mods.

The problem with that is we all are fairly stupid when the better answers arrive . Films are not real , or are they ? I am sure the church knew better than Galileo ? I decided there is no such thing as fiction . If anyone doesn't comprehend that I am not going to explain . I will say that knowing something to be understood as fiction is important .
When my brother was small a teacher wrote a very stupid thing " Simon seems to make no progress and relies on accumulated knowledge which he seems unable to add to " . My father who was a radar instructor knew enough to be doubtful of this as it was in electronics these two had clashed . My father insisted on an apology . My father said he doubted the ability of the teacher to judge the situation . The school paid for my perhaps 14 year old brother to go to a summer school arranged through Oxford University . I suspect they like my father were keen to prove this man vindictive . He was the highest grade student and the youngest .

The assumption,
That physics or maths has all the answers is misguided…There is nothing wrong with discussing astronomy, physics, or ideas..
The problem is ideas do challenge what is accepted as “real or correct” sometimes it’s just hot air..
However when everything else is proven wrong, what’s left however “improbable” must be true.
Truth will out…i.e. nobody with firm beliefs should find questions or science as a challenge..unless they have doubt..
The way we think now is obviously not correct or we would have all the answers..I don’t think we should hide in the dark…as soon as man asked why? We started on the path…
Even today people are burnt at the stake for “asking why”…obviously we must have a moral code or we are not human…still we must ask why…

I still think the leap Hawking made to big bang was incredible . That is unless he was just being romantic ? It is amassing how quickly it was accepted . I haven't accepted it . However I think it is very plausible . I think we should also hold some respect for Fred Hoyle . It is very important people can not just do a Shakespeare .

Dave didn't suggest that, in fact quite the opposite. He did suggest that perhaps it might be wise to actually understand physics in order to intelligently discuss the exciting unsolved problems in the field. But this is a forum that does not censor threads just because participants lack basic understanding of the issues.

I understand your point..
However explain the universe is infinate?
To my knowledge no one has a definitive answer..so everything is just ideas backed up by maths that is still evolving...I could be wrong..
But its a good way to keep people in the dark to say that because you are not working at CERN that you should not think about it..this sort of thing should be discussed by everyone in public..with all faiths and ideas and backgrounds...perhaps then we can come out of the dark ages..
If we look silly to some then thats fine with me...I find it interesting.

I will answer . We understood that . It is the principle of being able to dream . I have for all my life had to answer the everyday questions of hi fi people . Usually I would take the conversation to music as we are all experts of our own taste . Some have to be made confident of that even .
I remember reading about Alan Blumlein . If he saw a young engineer struggle he said " I am a little bored can I help with that " . This happened to me . The lads who built the equipment had a bad reputation with older people . None stayed . The kids had no idea who I was and mistakenly put me through a training session one day . Two hours later Daniel said " who are you Nigel " ? I am the designer I answered . " Why did you let us do that " why not I answered ? You know I genuinely learnt from them and it was not just me being friendly . When prototypes arrived they would never let me touch them . I felt like a King . These kids were the supposed no hopers ! I don't know what went wrong at school for them ? We allowed them to interview new staff and train them . We never had any problems . The company closed due to partners falling out over a woman . 23 of the 24 all instantly got jobs , it was the height of the recession . The one who didn't would have done if he got out of bed . He was unlike that when working for us . The company was saved , however the jobs went mostly overseas .

SY,
Just a thought..
it's interesting that (those that know) don't have anything to say..
(In public)
I wonder how many don't because they don't want to look silly..
Maybe they have a dream..or a realisation..OK it could be wrong..but it could be right..
What a shame..if ideas get stifled
I can't remember the program now that showed a plumber that was now producing some strange ideas...<<<Does education stifle creativity?
The above is a stupid comment..however our minds are educated to work in a certain way based upon ideas we are taught..ie is not free to think outside of doctrine..if the ideas are wrong or limiting then what? wait for a change to happen...It could be a long time..

I think wrong ideas are self policing . Where safety is concerned I have higher standards . I doubt the nuclear industry is staffed by idiots . That is up to the point when something happens . Any fool can see having your back up generators at sea level is stupid . The problem was the staff were so deferential they refused to act it is said . The word Tsunami is Japanese , that sort of suggests they would understand them . I reckon if Myself and Mr Gregg were staff members we might have dreamed of a problem ? When the problem kicked off I was screaming at the TV . Send in the Navy and pump some water . Hook up generators if possible from the ships . They had 8 hours to get it done . There was enough time I feel ?
Speculation has been the key that opens the discoveries that have improved our understanding of how the universe actually works. Copernicus, Newton, Einstein and Hawking all tried and eventually succeeded in imagining a better way to explain how many disparate observations could be simplified by a unifying idea. But when such speculation is not disciplined by a reasonable understanding of the current state of knowledge it tends to revert to the aimless drift into the mythological method that preceeded the scientific method. That is certainly fine as a way to entertain oneself, but it is unlikely to happen upon or recognize the next step forward in knowledge or to attract input from those more grounded in current theory.
Does education stifle creativity?
It can. Some education is actually designed to prevent creativity. Many engineering rules are specifically designed to prevent anarchy in the field. Imagine an engineer who arbitrarily decided how strong a 747 wing strut was, without regard to rigorously designed and taught analysis techniques?
I recommend Issac Asimov's "Profession", from the book Nine Tomorrows.
wiki has a synopsis, but I couldn't get the correct link.

I would never allow myself to be involved with aircraft . I am not the right person . I always said God must love them as they defy my understanding of statistics .
Lets for simplicity allow God to be real . When 9 11 caused aircraft to stop flying I noticed air temperatures increased . The aircraft ironically were solving a problem they are said to be very guilty of . I doubt anyone said that before ? I speculated that it might be that God allows aircraft as global warming prevention ? I didn't stay with the idea . Still , I thought we don't know . Scientifically speaking we must remember God is mysterious .
If you don't understand that God is the things we don't know then I have made a grave error in saying this . Things we don't know is the God of every man .
If asking I do believe in global warming . As we don't discuss religion I can offer no other opinions .

That is a very good point!
Looking at an example..of education..
I watched a news program.
There had been a massive land slide and water was running down the mountain…the news reporters were circling in their helicopter’s and people were drowning and they kept filming the devastation..
One girl was trapped in a large pool of water up to her waist..men were bailing out the water to try to get her out.. however the pool kept filling from the water about an inch deep across the plateau.
They were crying and had to leave the girl until the next day the water kept coming and they bailed again for hours…(In my head I was asking what not sand bag it use your clothes you must make the sides higher than the water and then bail it out)…The helicopters kept circling and filming..not one did anything …this went on for two more days and the girl died of a heart attack from the cold..
I told a friend she said that’s education talking….they just did not understand what to do..
But the people in the helicopters probably did…Its not good to terminate your story sold for money is it…They deserve ............
Any way…all it would have taken was just 5 mins of their time to save a life..
Thinking around the problem..

I too. Unfortunately, I on occasion receive (ahem) "requests" to visit customers on the other side of both ponds to assist them with some well established yet terribly misunderstood technology.
They will not pay to get me there via boat..sigh. white knuckle all the way.

That is tragic and thank you for telling it . QED . Where is the science that is humanity ?

I fly on the 25 th . Say a prayer , I will . I said one day the new Pope is a Nazi . The plane plunged from the sky dramatically as I said it when near Ibiza . I said quickly " OK he is not " . The whole plane near me laughed and the plane regained composure .
This forum is not the place to teach stuff which takes some years to learn, even for those with the necessary understanding of maths. However there is a shortcut for those who want to learn something about physics: buy almost any book written by Richard Feynman and read it carefully. It won't turn you into a physicist, but it may reduce your ignorance of physics.
Similarly, buy a good translation of the Bible in your native tongue and read it carefully. It won't necessarily turn you into one of the flavours of monotheist, but it may help you avoid some of the more common misconceptions about those of us who are.
(Mods, please forgive me: I am trying to be helpful without breaking the site rules!)
