The Pass Pub: The High-End Off Topic Thread

@Cal Weldon , you bloody mod having all Altecs ever made :cuss:

say that I have pair of Altec 417-8H (not really needing them, but wtf) .... which is, more or less, instrument speaker

they need recone work if I'm going to feel content

is there a possibility to take recone kit for some other 12" type, being more bass oriented - having proper low Fs?

in short - is there some bass driver practically made on same basket?

I can ask in speaker forum, but Pub is ....... Da Pub

Just plain luck that I happened to look in on you guys this morning.
How's everyone doing these days?

Oh Mighty One,
For sure they need reconing?
Too bad, those are basically the little brother of the 421, and a very well respected MI driver.
ZM, I think it might be a little much to ask more from that basket, than what you get out of the box. The whole thing is designed as a unit and asking for greater travel might be swimming against tide. I'm not sure you could turn it into a Frankendriver and be happy. Firstly though I would get in touch with the pros. Not sure if you have someone on your side of the pond but you can always contact Great Plains and see what they have to say. There is an LF version of the 417 but I do not know if the motor structure is identical.

Also, I have some sad news. The house that I use to store my gear is being sold so I am having to sell off a big chunk of it. No surprise, the Altec stuff is quite popular.
I am down to only a few pieces. It has been hard on me, watching it go like that, but at the same time, satisfying seeing the smiles on people faces. One fellow actually brought a utility trailer over as he was quite the enthusiast.

My loss is their gain. I will hold my head high.

Cheers everyone!

And for pure ***** and giggles, build yourself something like this and invite your friends over. Tell them if they can find the subwoofer, they can keep it.
RS 40-1354 in a 36" Cournucopya box. The most fun you will ever have building and listening to a 5.25" speaker.

There was an article in yesterday's 'Sunday Times', the great UK Sunday newspaper, in which they reported on attempts to reconstruct DoDos from samples of DNA which exist!

Who here has given a DNA sample recently? Come on, 'fess up - and prepare for a great need for patience when all of these new - in every sense - members start posting here...it will be a nightmare - especially when the Scandinavian newbies get going.

ZM, being almighty, omnipotent and all that stuff should look carefully at this great threat and decide whether to intervene and stop this nonsense!!

In an article during August they printed an update of understanding of the Dodo! The conclusion was that they were 'fast and lythe'.....and non fit that description better than our revered Master DoDo, His excellency and that stuff, ZM.
