Exotic Nipponese parts are nice to have, but for day to day work I find myself turning time and again to Neanderthal favorites 2N4401 and 4403. Still nice devices, as long as you don't expect them to hold off a lot of volts. I make sure I have plenty on hand, and may reach out and nab a few thousand more for the war chest.
In passing. the BF fets that Pico unearthed may be suitable as a cascode for something like a 2SK117 or 2SK170, as the cutoff voltage is rather high for the "C" version - worth a try....
