Wish that I could have said the same..... but back in those times we had forced service for those that got selected - or you could do a couple of years in jail (and some people did that) or you could haul *** to a country that would not send you back to USA - and a lot of people did that as well.
Most people just kept their head down as low as possible and prayed that they would not be the one to get "selected".....

Some of the escapees stayed in Ireland.....I met a few.
This post caused me to play Arlo Guthrie's "Alices Restaurant" - first time in years! And then I started watching uTube bits by Pete Seeger who did a gig with sister Peggy at combined ages of about 168 years!!! Pete was 91 at the time, still (just about) playing 12 string with National picks and of course his 7th fret banjo.

Arlo wuz a kick - and my brother Patrick live not to far away from Alice's Restaurant and haz been there a few times. Not bad for a place with a couple of tables.....

I have a couple of friends that live there as much as they can. They are USA citizens and thus can only visit and then have to leave for awhile - and then go back again when permitted. They live with the natives - have goats and a big veggie garden and love the sun-sets. Down there in the winter time - up here when the windy season gets nasty there....
