About the same time as your trip my family had a machine shop and we did some developmental work on reduction drives for Mare Island's fleet of boats.

I rode the USS Bonefish which was the test boat out under the gate on the surface, we came back through the gate not on the surface.

Your dad tell you the sport of tying string tight across the beam while on the surface..... and watching the newbie stare as it went slack.

I got a piece or two of the Bonefish, when they cut her up! One has a place of honor in the garden
