Andy, there's a link to the James Romeyn site and you'll see something called Space Generator that was initially developed by Duke LeJune of AudioKinesis, if my memory is correct - the designs are around the work of David Griesinger, Floyd Toole, Earl Geddes, etc and the idea of the benefits of both early and late arrival signal from speakers in a similar way to the Karlson approach. The current range of speakers from James Romeyn is pretty extensive
The partnership between Duke LeJune and James Romeyn has gone ahead with a number of other designs too including the idea of multiple subs as per Earl Geddes, etc
Another guy that's produced speakers along the similar lines of Stig Karlson is the Shahinian Acoustic speakers in NY - there's quite a few others but don't seem to be part of the popular audio scene ...
Nearly all of these sort of speakers require some imagination and mental flexibility regarding room acoustics and system setup - the acoustical loading isn't like the 'normal' box speakers at all and the higher levels of indirect sound takes awhile to adjust for - some people love it, others don't, even when the speakers are well setup.

Thanks for the follow up. I was aware of the Swarm (not a cost effective way to go about things) from earlier but not the Space Generator which wasn't on the Audio Kinesis site but a sister site selling audiophile foo (not usually a good sign). Despite the lack of information the Space Generator is the type of thing required in that it seeks to create reflections with a full spectral content that are delayed as much as practical and come from the sides as much as is practical. Looks like it is going to sold as a tweak in the manner of a super tweeter. However, the information I am not finding is the optimum way to aim the indirect sound, optimum ranges for the relative strength of direct and indirect sound and the degree to which imaging and timbre are sacrificed. The type of information needed to take an engineering approach. Could make a nice project but a lengthy one.
I looked at a pair of used Sonab omni directional speakers a few years ago, they were in lovely condition, but really cheap. I didn't buy them because the honest (!) sales person told me they would only work well in a particular size and layout of listening room. Furthermore, he told me that they really needed their companion Sonab amplifier to enable them to sound their best.
May have been BS but why else would he willingly lose a sale?
Geoff
In the UK the 60's mono speakers are around on the second hand market with the trader's asking around £100+ a pair which probably isn't good value because they aren't really worth the cost of refurbishing due to a modest performance. The 70's stereo ones are a lot rarer, will cost significantly more but are possibly worth refurbishing. Not sure the 80's designs ever made it to the UK in any significant numbers.
The Sonab speakers typically have a reasonable sensitivity and a benign impedance meaning they can be driven by pretty much any reasonable amplifier. The salesman may have been trying to use the speakers to get rid of a difficult to shift amplifier. Don't know but once a salesman is less than honest about one aspect...
I confess to not having read all posts of the thread. Did the question of why Stig Carlsson type speakers are so rare, get satisfactorily answered?
I'll bet the biggest difference between Carlsson and DRs is that when you see a pair of speaker low on the floor, showed in against the wall, you will think that it will not work or be special. It probably most in your head - as usual 😉
I have owned OA51 and OA52 and also standard monkey coffins...
The older OA1x series - they are really a bit different (but nice in some way).

Did the OA51/52 work for you? I have only briefly heard Larsen speakers (model 6 or 8 not sure which) at a couple of audio shows in a large room with a high ceiling. Although against a wall I heard nothing w.r.t. spaciousness in the way the 70s Sonab speakers in smaller rooms did (but my hearing is not what is was and I doubt the wisdom of using a large room). I presume the point of the inward and upward axis for the midrange plus the diffused and upward high frequency directivity is to contribute to spaciousness?
Absolutely. I had them for years. 52 the longest.Did the OA51/52 work for you? I remembered Sonab speakers and rebuilt it with new drivers.
I like it

So two Left version speakers for stereo? 🙂I've had a pair of OA-14L for ...
//
No, they are a symmetrical pair.
Now it's summertime and I will be going to summer cabin soon again - I must bring measuring gear and check polarity and take better measurements!

I asked because you called them "par of OA-14L" - which of course is only one of them 🙂
Anyways - the sold well in Sweden. Many pairs still out there but as drivers fall apart, they disappears. There hasn't been a proper production under Mr Carlsson wings since what - 25 years? And the current production is done by the hand of one person, pair after pair...
But yes, why so rare.... you mean rare in Germany?

Anyone know the origin of these speakers, they look like Alfatons:
