Hi everyone,
In coming across this site, I think I've found a great resource. While lurking I've read some very knowledgeable and informative posts. I think I'll enjoy all that I can learn from the people who frequent here. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to the discussions as well.

A little about myself: I've been interested in virtually all things art and music related for most of my life. I think that my interest in creating things myself stems from my creative experiences in art (making something where there previously was nothing), and the DIY punk ideals that I grew up on. I am perpetually thrilled at just how much we as individuals now have available to create our own useful equipment. It's easier now than ever to build things that I never would have dreamed of trying a few years ago. Kudos to this community for perpetuating that.

To get me started, maybe you could point me in the right direction for a project I've been thinking about:

I recently purchased an M-Audio 1010LT. This card has 8 unbalanced analog ins and outs. While two of the input have bypassable preamps, the other six do not. What I would like to do is build a rack-mount 8 channel preamp to go between the card and an old Fostex 450 mixer (no built in preamps). I am hoping to do this as inexpensively and as simply as possible. Mainly because I don't need all the features that a ready made 8 channel mic preamp would have, and I think this would be a fun project.

I have built and repaired a fair amount of gear in the past but I'm new to recording hardware. I've mostly been on the playing side in th past. While I think that a project like this is within my ability, my inexperience with the hardware I need leaves me a bit wanting in the ability to identify and decide what I should be building.

While I have done a cursory search for similar projects I have not found that is quite what I'm looking for, either because I haven't recognized their suitability for my application, or because I am choosing the wrong search terms.

So, my question as the new guy: What forum would be best to start this discussion; Solid State, Chipamp, other?

BTW, I'll add a link to the thread once I create it here so we don't get a discussion going in the wrong area.

Thanks!
