Hi guys,

I just bought a cheap Chinese tube preamp off of EBay for ~ 50 bucks delivered including the transformer. It mates beautifully to the RevC. I am very impressed with the sound quality, very clean and clear, very 3D, great imaging.

Thanks PJN

That looks very clean and straight forward.

Which flavor did you get. I couldn't quite understand what they meant by "Kit". Does that mean pre + trans = kit or did you have to solder the components?

Also, what are you feeding it with - CD or computer or both?

The board is already assembled, all you need to do is hook up the transformer. For right now I'm feeding it with a CD player in my basement workshop system. As soon as I make up a decent box for it I'll give it a try in my main system feeding a DAC to it. The DAC is fed by a WD Live box that can stream internet media like Pandora, or feed my library of ripped CDs on an attached USB drive. It's a really nifty little device.

Hi All,

I have decided to give this one a try.

Symmetric Complementary J-FET preamplifier JC-2 kit ! | eBay

It is the recommended unit by Stanton at Jim's Audio on eBay - has the warmest sound of all his kits.

So my signal chain will be: Computer motherboard SPDIF -> WM8740X2 DAC (almost built) -> JC-2 Pre -> Lighter Note -> MyRef-C - Sunflower Speakers.

That should result in a clean path with minimum mechanical devices. I'm a big fan of FLAC and Apple Lossless files as sources.

Got my fingers crossed. 😉

Hi Bob,

Not yet, I screwed up one channel trying to upgrade the caps and I'm trying to work through the repairs. The board is really cheap and easily damaged. the cap upgrades did improve things noticabily though on the channel that works. I'll keep plugging away as time permits.

Hi Turbon,

Your probably right but I don't have any real knowledge of tube amps, so I'm just bumbling along a bit. I have been forced into using wire jumpers to "repair" damaged traces. I was able to get the one channel working that way. At this point it is starting to resemble a point to point build. I'm starting to suspect that one of the caps I installed might be defective, I know that's it's a long shot. My next move will be to replace it to see what happens.
