The Lounge A place to talk about almost anything but politics and religion.

After wading through some of the threads on this forum I realize we are often talking about religion and politics !

Religion is about belief without evidence - hence a source of argument to be avoided by not talking about it.

Whereas what we see all the time on the forum are arguments about beliefs in sound (OpAmps, Capacitors, Tubes vs transistors, cables, Vinyl etc.) and debates about the lack of or inadequacy of evidence.

Not much difference is there !!!!

Hi Gareth,
I know what you are saying, but talking religion would be like the ultimate cable thread with all the noise and confusion X 10 (at least). Politics, don't go there man. More of the same. There are reasons why we don't allow those discussions. Use your imagination.

So I'll say that you are correct in your observations as you have defined the terms. Let's leave it at that.

That may be the working definition used by the irreligious when seeking to avoid talking about it. As it already assumes a certain point of view it kills off discussion without actually facing any issues.

I rarely disagree with a Mod when he has his cop hat on, but this time I have to. Note that I am talking about the definition of a word, not the content of the subject the word refers to. By strongly implying that the content is empty the OP is talking about religion and the Mod appears to be agreeing with him, thus violating forum rules.

If we can't talk about religion here - which I fully understand - can we also prohibit ignorant dissing of religion?

Most folks on here are above all that nonsense anyway.
Another dismissive comment on religion.

I heard once that surveys (in the western world, I guess) show that approximately 40% of the population have some belief in some personal God. Perhaps surprisingly (to some) the figure for working scientists approaches 40% too - the figure for arty academics is much lower. Therefore let us not make the convenient assumption that the figure for DIYaudio members approaches 0%, or the figure for intelligent forum members approaches 0%.

So let us ban talk of religion here, but let us apply the ban even-handedly so that monotheists, pantheists, deists, atheists and agnostics can all play together nicely as we argue about audio. Maybe the forum rules should be updated to make this clear, and then this thread can be deleted?

Read my comment again in relation to anatech's previous one, exactly where do i dismiss religion?
How on earth can my comment on the fact that most of us on here are above getting involved in petty political and religious squabbles possibly be construed as an attack on religion. Are you really that defensive becasue the only other alternative i can think of is that you are deliberately trolling 🙁

That is what I like about DIYaudio - almost any statement can receive correction from someone more knowledgeable - or more awake.

This becomes essential when people deliberately twist an innocuous statement to make a person seem nasty.

This thread is becoming a good example as to why we don't discuss religion or politics. Hopefully it'll get closed soon.
