The JamBoxx

Greeting, I have been looking around the site for several weeks and enjoy what I see. I have a few questions about a JamBoxx I am Building. I have plenty of woodworking skills so my basis are covered there, I just need help on the electronics end.

Here is my plan.
This unit will be for use in my garage while I am working. I am not looking for max volume etc, just a great clean sound at low volume, at minimal pricing.

The size of the box will be 20 inches wide by 10 inches deep and 10 inches tall.

The amp I am using is the
Lepai Digital 2x15W Mini Amplifier
with Remote USB MP3 SD FM (Lepai Digital 2x15W Amplifier with Remote USB MP3 SD FM 310-302)

The speakers (2) I was considering are these
HiVi B4N 4" Aluminum Midbass Round Frame

(HiVi B4N 4" Aluminum Midbass Round Frame 297-429)

And I will be using the MP3 output of the amp to play music from my Galaxy S2.

Here are my questions.
1. Are these speakers gonna work in this box?

2. Do I need to port the box or seal it?

3. I have tried many of the online speaker box calculators, but cant figure out how to use them, is there a very simple one?

4. Are the speakers I have chosen enough, or do I need to add tweeters?

5. How hard would it be to add something that would allow me to pick up AM radio (so I can listen to the ballgames)? And what would you suggest?

Thanks for your replys.

Not sure where to put this question, I'll try here.

Those drivers will need a tweeter and a crossover, since their top end is shown as 3000 hz. I would suggest looking for completed project with this driver or a similar (maybe wider range) one. Look for a pair with similar volume to what you're planning, and you can make small adjustments in dimensions while maintaining the same internal volume, and then the sound should be the same.

Zaph audio has some well-regarded designs, especially a lot of small ones using 3" or 4" drivers. Look at this one:

Zaph|Audio - 4" Bargain Mini

The Hi-Vi products are nice for the money, and Tang-Band also offers a good value and a lot of options. You might also look at the Mark Audio full range drivers. Lots of great options out there. If you use a good full-range driver, you can skip the tweeter or cross it over very high just for a little more sizzle.

I would search rummage sales for a cool old retro transistor radio, and just plug onto the earphone jack. Maybe build a place of honor for it in the box.

Good Luck!

I know that you write that maximum volume isn't interesting for you but seriously those drivers are 85dB/w/m and 8 ohms. A TA2020 amp will deliver max 8W into 8 ohm. I'm fearing that you'll run out of amp headroom before you even find the music audible.

Buckapound, thanks for the replys, I have already bought the above amp and speakers (live and learn I guess). If it turns out not sounding good, I will pull the speakers and replace them with something else, and use the HIVI in the next project.

It looks like the Aura tweeter is not available anymore, do you have another suggestion and possibly a crossover?

Saturnus, we will see.
