FF125K in FH ?
Hi!
Have anybody tried other drivers than the FE126e or 108Ez in the FH?
I have looked at the FF125K datasheet and it looks like it might be a possible "drop-in" replacement. Basket and magnet seems to be identical to FE126, but with a different cone using an aluminum center dome/dustcap.
Why?,
well I do not know much about the FF series, but I have read some indications that they maybe could be a little smoother sounding than the little forward sounding FE series.

The hope is that a wide variaty of drivers will be tried.
I've had personal experience with FE126 & FE108eS, Josh is using FE127, and here is a Bulgarian build using "Sofaital" (made in France) drivers

PS: early days still in the life of the Frugel-Horn and we are already seeing some really nice builds with a lot of artistic flare.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Now that's one cool looking pair of frugels! The idea of the supra-baffle is nice, but they look so extremely sleek nude!!

mmmmmm,
Perhaps I'm being somewhat forwards, but whatever happened to the flat-pak idea?
With fingers-crossed, the flat-paks are still a living concern...

Still alive and well... delayed by a number of things, as soon as Chris gets his rec room ready for the new furniture his Mrs ordered, we'll be on it (end Jan/early Feb)

Glad to hear Chris has his priorities straight! (domestic felicity 1st, everything else a distant 2nd)

I forgot to send my comments in regarding THe listening session Don and I had at my place.
Don brought his FE108 frugal horns over during the Christmas period. He also brought his grounded grid preamp.
We sat and enjoyed a few jazz CD's. I was really impressed with the sound stage and clarity. We could not really try moving them around too much as they have spikes and I have hardwood floor. We placed them on a piece of plywood and did some minor adjusting to get things just right. I am quite sure we could have tuned them into the room better by moving them back and forth from the wall.
Anyway I was real impressed. I thought they sounded great. Crystal clear clarity and very big sound stage was very very good. The bass was not booming or rib shaking yet it was not real thin either. My little sub in the corner tuned to + - 80 htz and turned up to very low levels seemed to blend in just nicely.
For normal listening levels I think these are a very good choice especially with a small sub or two.
The grounded grid pre-amp is also very nice. It has more gain than my Mini-A needs. It was definitely smooth and nice sounded.
All in all a ver enjoyable evening. Oh yah my bi polar fonkens sounded great with the grounded grid up front.

Thanks again, Scott. I really enjoyed seeing/ hearing your speakers. The "Fonkens" were a speaker many, including myself could happily live with. Very articulate, excellent imaging, and a really nice weight to their presentation.
For those who've not seen Scotts speakers, the build quality is outstanding🙂 Not a few dealers would be very uncomfortable with these around!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum (mostly a car audio guy) but I've been patiently waiting for this flat-pack idea to become a reality also.
I was considering the BK-16 flat-pack from Madisound but after researching on this site it seems that the Frugel is a much better approach for a full-range project. I would attempt the build myself but I don't have the equipment or space to rip large sheets of plywood. My tablesaw is good for small cuts of MDF for car projects but nothing this intricate.
I'm curious, has anyone compared the Frugel Horn to the complete packages made by http://www.thehornshoppe.com. The design is similar and the speaker options are similar (their base model has the FE103E instead of the FE126E but both offer the FE108ES). Obviously having someone make them is going to cost close to double but the price seems reasonable and the quality of the finished product looks pretty decent (I'm not sure if I can make them look that good even with the flat-pack).
Also, would I be crazy to power the frugels with a class-T amp (SI or perhaps Trends Audio) or should I be looking for a tube-amp? If you haven't figure it out already, I'm new to the whole hi-fi home audio scene.

This is where the project all started. If you read the first page you will see that the Frugel-Horn idea was sparked from the Hornshoppe's design. So they are very similar. And a T-amp would go great with these little fullrangers. As Dave said, the flats will be available soon, and i think would be a great idea.
Good Luck,
Josh

A shoot-out will happen some day. Chris & i are even prepared to buy a used pair at a reasonable (ie cheaper the better) price. We have heard a set, but from the generation that had FE108sigmas in them (the early FE103 based driver).
Chris & i started with something as close as you are going to get to an EdHorn as is possible without sawing one in half and seeing what tricks Ed has inside. The plans for that horn are in the last appendix of the Frugel-Horn document.
That horn did not sound as good as the F-H level 0 that we built next, and refinements attributable to Ron Clarke in the Level 1, 2, & 3 builds take it beyond the Level 0 by quite a ways.
Don't get me wrong, Ed's Horn is no slouch.
One thing we do know is that we sent a pair of modified FE126 off to a long-time Hornshoppe owner to try in the EdHorns and compare with the Hornshoppe supplied FE126. He wouldn't send them back.
