The diyAudio.com preamp project!

Suggestion

While project management is not my forte, you might want to generate multiple threads for this thing. At the rate it is going, it will be over 500 pages long, and no one will be able to keep up with it.

So......how about separate threads for:

Gain cell

Power supply

Attenuator

Chassis

Readouts and switching

Micro

Re: Folded cascode

good point jocko, thanks. you are right, it will be one big box, or actually a bunch of medium-sized ones... 😀

i was just thinking yesterday how to break out this thread. we should decide on the main title of the thread (diyAudio.com Multichannel Preamp?), followed by the section. so "diyAudio.com Multichannel Preamp: Power Supply" etc. maybe? lemme know what you guys think. i think the fragmentation jocko proposes is good. we don't have to start all of the threads yet but i guess it doesn't hurt.

HDTV: i guess my thread title is a little deceiving. i'd like this to be a sort of "official" diyaudio.com preamp in that we all have input into it. but it is not what many would consider the "ultimate" preamp. if you want the ultimate preamp, i think you'd be better off buying a Pass X0.2 or something like that. if you go back, oh, 15 pages or so, you will say that this preamp is meant to fill in a void - a flexible yet (relatively) purist multichannel remote control preamp. i simply don't know of any very high-end, multichannel analog preamps out there. there maybe a unit or two out there by now but they are probably esoteric and very expensive. i'm trying to synergize the convenience of the slick Japanese units with the transparency and musicality of the minimalist stuff. the quality of each individual channel of this preamp will be excellent i think, but i do not know if it will beat the best purist stereo designs by Pass, or even Harry or Jam. probably not, but i am hoping it will be damn close, and be far more flexible and usable. one of my intangible requirements is that the "cool" factor must be very high, i want it to be one slick piece of electronics i can show off to all my friends too. 😛

p.s. Mr. Pass, i know you are out there somewhere. i was at the Stereophile show last year, where Sony was doing the multichannel SACD demos. they were using their own speakers (blech) but your amps and a "custom-made" multichannel preamp. was that an invention of yours?

If the shoe fits.......

You came up with the idea, so it is your baby. Heh-heh.

Having separate parts of the project going on in parallel is a great way to speed things up. But it needs a strong leader calling the shots. A certain telecom company blew the doors off of AT&T using this approach. 60 days for a project vs. 2-3 years.

ok i will lead each thread for now...

... until someone more capable steps up to take over a given subject. i will remain in charge of the project as a whole though. 🙂

name of preamp/thread? which modules to start with? i propose 1.) active circuits, 2.) attenuator, and 3.) power supply to start. we will want 4.) switching and layout soon too. #4 will include inputs/outputs, etc.

Maybe Jason will be kind enough to give us a Son Of Dork Forum so that we can keep all the threads togther?

i was thinking that at the beginning, it would be really really nice, but i thougth the request was out of line. but you guys are more senior than i am so maybe you could throw around a little weight, do a favor for a little nobody like me. 😛

new forum

I'm definitely in favor of a new forum category. But maybe something a little more generalized would be more appropriate - like "custom designs" or "new designs" whereas all the other forums seem to deal mainly with tweaks (except of course the speaker forums)

As for where this project should head, I'm firmly in the camp of splitting up the control and gain sections into two separate, though modular sections. I'm sure there are loads of people who are going to want a nice control unit to plug into their own designs (the generalized interface itself might take a lot of thought), and there are other people who want to create a new circuit with their own needs. Aside from that sort of organization, I think it also makes sense because each topic is really huge, and they require different skill sets so we'll be able to stay much more on track. As for me, I work in computer engineering and I like the digital hardware and microcontroller coding. On the other hand, I can't contribute much to the analog sections, but I want to learn.
