No, seriously... is a proper ear wash. Now, after you're done with the "maybe you should wash from time to time" jokes (no, cotton swabs do more harm than good)... Looks like some people get wax build-up, some don't. There's a DIY method but I won't talk about that as I'm no doctor and not willing to be held responsible for your permanent hearing loss. Google it if you're willing to take the risk, or better go to the doctor.
Bottom line is that you can forget how highs sound like and not even realize it. If it happens to both ears at the same rate, you'll find yourself in disbelief after you're done with either one but the other is still unfixed. If you have the problem, a week of sheer wonder at how water running down the sink or pulling the blinds sound like will follow.
A sign of the problem is abnormal noise after a (long) bath, water dissolves/softens that crap and it starts to move around.
