I did read what you wrote about the center tonal balance being midrange heavy. I'm curious where you got that information from. I _DO_ notice this effect with a center channel speaker, but I eq flat, to match the sides so to me it seems this is happening from the speaker location.
From playback in auditoriums, that was certainly not the case. All channels were equalized to the same curves. Recording might be a different issue however.
Also, the THX curve for home likes to do different things, like de-emphasize the treble, so if THX has a particular choice for the center channel curve, I would not be aware of it.

Hi guys, I saw this thread yesterday, and just nice the conversation now has moved on to the midrange effect of a dedicated center vs phantom center.
From Floyd Toole's book, he documented a 2khz null with phantom center due to the difference in distance for sound to reach the left and right ear, basically an effect of the head transfer function. A real center doesn't have this null.
