Vladimir's buildings were what started this adventure, but in addition to the lawyerly issues, we came to realize that his high ceilinged concrete rooms would be very difficult to make sound decent.

hehe

considering all comments and pictures - I have slight impression that almost nobody was seriously listening at first BAF .......

( after all - THAT we all can do at home ) :clown:

Q&A about the next Burning Amp Festival:

Same place? (Ft. Mason in Fan Francisco?)

Same time frames? (10 AM to ~~ Dark?)

Dates: September? October? November? (We have good weather clear to December here in the Bay Area)

Fees / Tickets / Costs? (donations?)

Web address ??

I'm ready! I had a lot of fun last year and my Wife will be along as well ... 😀

Fort Mason:

It is a great place = clean, well lighted, great location, great views of SF Bay, decent SF parking, close to Pier 39 (for kids and spouses).

It is an old brick fire station so the acoustics may not be concert hall quality. The out of doors location is actually very good audio wise. 😉

Again, it is also two rooms at best- A too big room and a too small room. It was still very tempting , but we wanted to go with more smaller rooms. That way visitors can move at their own pace between the rooms, and within the rooms, the demonstrators can set of various systems and rotate them.. We loved the Ft Mason venue and hoped we could get various smaller rooms there, but it turns out that option was impossible.

Hi Mark and Vladimir,

I attended the Head Fest gathering last year at the Raddison in SJ near the airport. The event was sponsored by head-fi.org.

It was a VERY successful event. They booked the larger conference hall and several smaller rooms in the same wing on the bottom floor. The set-up was ideal since there is a secondary lobby with one enterance to control admission that links to the conference hall and the other rooms. There is a nice restaurant and bar as well.

The room rates are very reasonable and it's close to the airport and light rail to downtown.

Let me know if I can help.

Hi SY,

The cool part is that it was kind of loud with all the participants. Our gathering is much smaller. The venue at this hotel is away from the rooms. There is an aspect to the noise we create, but during the day it maybe OK. I'm sure they have a policy we could check.

The breakout rooms ranged in size from something like 10x12 to 20x20, if memory serves me. More like a real living room.

It might be fun to plan a scavaging trip around Silicon Valley since Quest, Halted Specialities, Weird Stuff, and ACE components are near by.

Collectively, there are probably a lot of us with good contacts here in the Valley with semiconductor companies who might participate in demos and classroom theory. I bet I could get the guys from Cirrus, ADI, and AKM to talk to us about DSP's and DAC's. Another angle to consider if it's held in the Valley.

David,
Funny you should mention this. Last year after the show, the geeks from out of the country wanted to go on a road trip to do a little sightseeing. What monuments did they want to see? - Silicon Valley, In and Out Burger, Fry's, Apple HQ, and above all: GOOD SURPLUS!!!

Here's a list that I found on line a few years ago but it is a bit out of date. Could you try to remake something similar for the area from San Jose through Marin? One problem is that a lot of places don't allow visitors- they are strictly web based, others are out of business, and off course , there are new places..

Addresses and business hours are essential, directions no longer required with the various maps online. A nice loop would be invaluable to DIY Audio members whenever they find themselves in the Bay Area..

I am pretty sure that I can get Mark Brasfield and maybe others from National Semiconductor's audio group. They will probably want to show their low-distortion LME line. (They would probably attend at Fort Mason as well.)

I am just brainstorming here, but what about a college? Community Colleges might do it for the fee. Santa Clara University (private) might have sound studios. Or rent rehearsal spaces?

The Tech museum rents space, but it looks bigger than we can afford.

Not as many surplus stores as there used to be, sad to say. Haltek is long gone, and Alltronics is mail order only. ACE is history, as far as I know. That leaves Halted and Anchor, and perhaps HDB in Redwood City. Weird Stuff is still around, too, though there may not be much there for audio types.

If the plan is for someplace North of the Bridge, I would let George and Ed at Halted / HSC in Rohnert Park ( http://www.halted.com/ ) know ahead of time 😀 ...

In & Out Burgers in Petaluma, etc.

Apple store in the Santa Rosa shopping center and in Corta Medera.

Personally, I would consider a trip to Tall Toad Music (non electro-geek / Petaluma) and Zone Music (electro-geek to the max / Cotati) worthwhile.

(Point of interest: Zone Music in Cotati Ca. has two good sounding recording studios, a big court yard w/ outdoor stage, a big back yard for plenty of parking, lots of power outlets, etc. ... but it would have to be a mostly "out doors" event if held there. Info / contact: http://www.zonemusic.com/events.htm ... http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl = zip code = 94928 = zoom out to 2 miles = 1 inch)

Ask Sy about the Wine Country ... 😉
