The Black Hole......

let’s put it this way, if audio is anything like medicine then the positive reinforcement affects of the ‘snake oil’ do actually work, but only in your mind, which in turn makes for a happy body. Placebo effect I reckon!

Placebo effect has been proven scientifically. There are even studies on why medicines are failing in trials linked to it. And lets be honest, if more people said on here that they liked 'x' because they got the dopamine hit they wanted there would be a lot less arguments.

measurements are just that

sound quality is a nebulous thing that is hard if not impossible to describe in words

If somebodies entertainment system entertains, there is no argument. If they chose their equipment by its measurements AND are happy thats a lot less silly than kitchen table glomming then claiming a breakthrough?

Do you need your second cup of coffee?

Some measurements might be a placebo for sound quality.

Maybe some people like measurements because it gives them a hit of dopamine.

Sounds silly when presented against one's prevailing bias, doesn't it?

And maybe too many of us get a dopamine hit by blathering our un-validated opinions (that crosses the spectrum, so I'm accusing everyone). 😉

Can we get away from placebo effects? It has such a huge mechanistic and translatability/repeatability problem that it's just another way to bicker.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- audio playback is a hedonistic pursuit (and I don't mean that necessarily in a negative way), so if it brings you joy, great. We'd do best to remember that what works for oneself doesn't mean it's universal.

I've heard it said in here that the emotional-physio "shape" you happen to be in, effects how something - like an audio system - sounds. I bet many can relate to the idea that if you're in a particularly foul mood, even the stereo system doesnt sound good.

Therefore, if the mind in turn makes "a happy body" (and of course, vice-versa) and your ears as sense organs are a component of that body...

Bob, with a wife like that you're in a perfect position to check this out. Hopefully you'll have a day when the stereo sounds a bit less than satisfying and she's available to offer holistic healing based "treatment". Ask her to knock herself out on you. Afterward give the system a second listen.

Perhaps you can report the effect is better than a capacitor or cable change ;') Or even the biggest single factor change in how it sounds you've found yet.

I like to try to focus on things that are pretty universal, like how we locate sounds, for example, there are more similarities than differences, but people don't like to hear that either.

Referencing a post after the one quoted above would anyone say that where sounds are perceived to be located in space, from left to right, swap locations when you are in a foul mood?

I have another theory that never seems to gain any traction: Not only do people hear differently, but different people are also annoyed / pleased by different kinds of imperfections / "accuracies" that we hear in reproduced sound.

For one example: I've never been able to get past record noise. It's pretty much a deal breaker, just too distracting. Whereas others clearly seem able to hear through that, and listen to what's underneath.

This would go a ways toward explaining the endless debates over vinyl vs digital vs tubes vs transistors etc. etc. I think.

Thanks for digging that rabbit hole but I’m gonna graciously decline the invitation.......audio is my healing (listening and/or tweaking).
The wife does this thing called ‘reiki’ or ‘healing touch’ that is supposed to be some transfer of bad energy..... but in reality it’s just a meditative form of relaxation, almost hypnosis IMO.
But anyhow, same with any hobby I have/had it’s just as much or more about fiddling as it is doing.

Maybe the psychological effects of having a hand into what your doing opens up a little more enjoyment......or possibly frustration (as is the case occasionally!) Then ‘fixing’ it after screwing it up gives a sense of accomplishment!😀

Now in the subjectivist defense there’s plenty of things I’ve verified over the years that are supposedly not audible. (Don’t ask for examples....no good will come from it!)
