The Best Valve Amp Design In Modern Time: Poll Candidates

The best valve amplifier I have heard from the last few decades is my modified 5-20. It is also the worst one I have heard, as it is also the only one I have heard. It is a long long time since I went to an audio show and I have never bought a commercial amplifier, so I have no idea (and little interest in) what other amps sound like.

I cannot see the point of this thread. It may arise from confusion about what is meant by 'best'.

The very word "poll" implies opinion. I apologize for the lack of clarity. What "best" means is dependent on your opinion. In otherwords, which one do you think sounds best to your years. It should be obvious that what sounds best to your ears might not sound best to my ears. I would not expect anyone to know what sounds best to my ears (except me of course)

This poll will not change peoples lives or take the world out of military conflict. It's just a fun poll that some will find interesting.

Lets call it an "Opinion Poll", then again, that's the essence of a poll , right? You wouldn't poll to see if a fact is really a fact would you...

I wouldn't, but you would be amazed how many people would and do. Some people seem to genuinely believe that science is some sort of democracy, so that if enough people believe something then it must somehow be true.

Some people would believe that the quality of the listening experience is what really matters. That's not about scientific absolutes and no one ever claimed it was. When you go off on one of your hobby horses you really show that you haven't got a clue about why people are interested in HI-FI.

You can also add the RIGHT science which describes music is not physics that can be used only and only if there is no listener in place, as physics cannot describe feelings. One can use some physics as a guideline but it ends there. The nonsense arises when some "illuminates" come out with fantastic theories on correlation.....
Some people were born with thick slices of ham on the eyes and will die like that. If they are happy with their wrong beliefs it is fine. The only issue is that some of them are becoming quite boring.....😀

Indeed. I am generally a live and let live guy but find all this absolutist ******** tedious to say the least.

My words must have become garbled before you read them. I did not mention 'the listening experience'. I was talking about science.

I will admit that I am puzzled why some people seem to claim to be interested in hi-fi when in fact they are interested in something different: a pleasant sound. If you regard this as one of my hobby horses then so be it. If someone claimed to be interested in accurate portrait photography yet all his sitters ended up with green faces in the photos you might question his understanding of the word 'accurate'.

I got into audio around 99-00 and read everything I could about this subject since then. IMO a lot of development stopped in tube amps for hifi before that point. This was due to the fact that a large number of tube enthusiasts were "purists" and refused "sand" in their amps. Put another way, they were luddites and development suffered because of it. Only recently have a few guys been willing to go against this vocal group and design amplifiers that use the best techniques and technology available to push designs forward. IMO there is no taboo in engineering and design. If it works, it works. On this site there are one or two amps that exemplify this. The most obvious is the Red Light District amplifier by SY. I would also say that Wavebourns pyramid amplifier designs also seem to follow this ideal. There are a few others but you will have to dig. In the end if you want a truly current design you will most likely have to design it yourself.

*edit* I would like to add Greenvalves GM70 as another modern design

*edit* Another fun poll may be how would you design a thoroughly modern tube amplifier?

this is for the OP...

Eddie, you are in an not so good path here.

First, you want to learn.
Then, you drop that, and look for a software that will accept voice commands "design me a KT88 PPamp"
Then you are looking for the "bestest" schematic.

Before long, you will go looking for the "best" capacitor...

Better spend some more time building a simple Single Ended. It is both rewarding and educational.

My 2 Yuro cents.

Too much typing. 😀 Short version: define specifically what something has to do, use fundamental principles to achieve it, then judge it based on how closely it achieves the defined metrics.

somehow i knew you would say that.....😀
i have a fair idea of what you are not saying.....or not sayin....
i just wanted to see if i can get it twice from you....😀
