Actually, I think Keith's referring to the John Linsley Hood Book, not Horowitz and Hill.
However, H&H (the art of electronics - note the missing 'linear') is probably easier to get hold of, and probably more useful for general information. I'd recommend it for a starting point over JLH (which is a very good read, but skips a lot of useful nitty gritty).
 
H&H is a great book for engineers, but too much of the book is device physics for hobbyists and will be hard work if you don't have a strong maths background. JLH is light on theory, but very good on explaining the application of common electronic circuits
