The amazing fallacy of High End stuff...

Preamp or Amp/DAC/Speaker is to please customer's ear, so if customers are satisfied, it worth its price. After all, it is just for entertainment, unlike scope.
Hence the reason why sellers / shills saturate the press / internet with all sorts of praises to prime the customers' perception. Some people are easily swayed by suggestions. As they say, "There's a sucker born every minute."

How about a nice Fisher console from 1964. The fancy one was $645, which in today's money is $5,364.02. Was this considered a "high end fallacy" in 1964?

The Fisher systems/consoles from the early era like the Electra, President, etc., were crafted to be some of the finest in their league.
The console cabinets were hand-crafted of real woods, by masters, and of course made the price high.
Fisher had an "in house" team doing the cabinets, others often farmed out the work from established furniture builders like Drexel, etc.

Things were different back then - people actually worked for a living, and large companies employed many workers, each trained and specialized in a given field.

My parents bought a "top line" RCA Victor console in 1963, and it cost $630, payable in installments.
It also was constructed of solid cherry, with the best (tube) electronics that RCA had at the time.

You can't really compare a large console with simple components, they're two vastly different birds.

So a polished metal housing is something that needs to be considered betrayel und people buying that need to be called names as they are less than medium bright bulbs.
But "cabinets ... hand-crafted of real woods, by masters" totally justify a price that equals (in 2020 dollars) 5311,17?

But it's nice that no one has to work for a living anymore.

Superlatives without a reference point are pretty meaningless

No they weren't, they were built to a price in a factory using mass labour and materials that were commonly available and acceptable to the intended buyer.

So, exactly the same as Amazon or Foxconn then.

You should take up writing copy for audiophile retailers. You are very good at it.

It was newish tech back then, thats what you were paying for. Because of the present tube fad thats a bad analogy. Replace the tube amp with a 60s color tv that was a similar price. Hey its full of tubes so it must be better. If I built one today how much could I sell it for?

It is special .I heard it last week along with ref 160 amp . The sad reality is that 99.99% of DIY folks will never get near that quality. Good news is you don't have to buy it to be happy.

Funny thing is I was switching the amp from triode to pentode on the fly and the needle of the big meter got stuck in the middle. I thought my friend will get a heart attack . I simply knocked on the front glass and the needle returned to its resting position - magic ha ha

I learned that the first year I went to AXPONA. A show for rich men with white hair that can't hear above 15K. Most rooms I had to walk out of because it sounded so bad! 😛
Axpona is a special case because its in Chicago. A second red neck rivera after Myrtle Beach . Nothing sounds good there .
I hear up to 12kHz and have a big hole around 3 kHz related to workind with hammer for several years .Nobody carded to give ear protection to white NG's slaving in USA back in time .

"Indian" type sweatshops? Your disdain for these professions is rather sad & all...
I'd really like to see you just try to diagnose a collection of faults on todays modern cars...
Also, todays Police officer needs to be much much more the better person than those of just twenty years ago...
The likes of the greasy dumb mechanic & the macho ***-kicker cop are long gone.
