The original “Candle in the Wind” was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, the iconic American actress and sex symbol who passed away in 1962. The song reflects on the fleeting nature of fame and the pressures that celebrities face, comparing Monroe’s life to a candle that burns brightly but is snuffed out too soon.

Taupin’s lyrics are poignant and reflective, starting with the famous line, “Goodbye, Norma Jean,” which refers to Monroe’s birth name, Norma Jeane Mortenson. The song speaks of Monroe’s struggles with fame, how she was misunderstood, and how her life, like a candle in the wind, was fragile and easily extinguished.

After the tragic death of Princess Diana in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, Elton John and Bernie Taupin rewrote the lyrics of “Candle in the Wind” to honor Diana’s memory. This version was performed by Elton John at Diana’s funeral on September 6, 1997.
