what no push push TL 🙂

dave you using ported? :-( dont bail on me 🙂

I was over at ChrisBs giving him internet tutoring (actually an aside from listening to his curved back Nautilus inspired boxes (using a technique similar to your Navin)) and he couldn't remember his password so i logged on to show him how to link a picture into a message.

These aren't my work. ChrisB did them for Terry at the local hi-fi store. My involvement consisted of taking pictures & occasionally helping Chris shift them about when he was building them.

The intention is that they would be Winchester clones... i rather like them, but they didn't catch the imagination of the fellow who had them built (they are for sale i understand -- and relatively cheap -- just keep in mind that unless you can drive your pickup by to pick em up shipping might cost as much as the speaks -- they weigh in at a zillion pounds).

They are cherry veneered ply over MDF with a Nautilus-like inner matrix with solid corners. Chris also built a set of factory spec TQWT for Phy 8s in the same style (those don't sound so good) and he is doing my bipolar 40-1354s in a similar fashion (i don't get to build the pretty ones -- more like i can't).

1. seems to me that the Dynaudio 52 (version of 50) is available ehre for Rs. 32K (about US$650). This is less than what you'd pay for it in the US (usually $800). given that it makes sense to check out some of the better brands here than build.

duties, taxes etc on drivers double the landed cost of drivers. so a $100 woofer costs $200 by the time it gets to India.

One could conceivably build a nice pair of speaker (incl boxes) for $600 in the US. However one might not be able to build the same in India.

the reason for the differences. I am not implying that Dynaudio or it's distrubitor is doing any of the under. Just that the Audience 50/52 is one of my fav. 6" 2 ways.

1. cost of manpower in India is very low so dealer magins are less

2. the is a certain ammount of under invoicing (no proof but you get a gut feeling) done by some of the local importers not that anyone is compalining. I am quite sure everyone concerned is making out. Given the absurd duty structures and that the duties hardly protect any local industry I condone this under invoicing.

3. some speakers are actually made in India and a small part of the production gets sold in the Indian market. From what I understand 25% of the prodcution of an Export Oriented unit can be sold locally.

Now to build a pair for $600 I'd need to get drivers for $400 ($200 for box and XO) locally which means $200 in the US. That effectively means a $70 woofer and $30 tweeter (Vifa makes a M18 and D27 that meet this criteria). Now can this system compete with the Audience 52? I dont know. Is it worth it? Only if you are an DIY or want a TL or push push system that are not avaiable commercially.

dave, you might want to cross link this with the "T/S specs for indian drivers" thread.
