Can someone here confirm whether a compactron can be tested only "in" circuit? There's a statement by someone somewhere who makes it very clear you simply cannot test them otherwise. Is it a voltage issue possibly? TIA
Recipe for Tiger Soup . . . First you catch a tiger.
Recipe for testing Compactron tubes . . . First find a tube tester with Compactron sockets.
I do not know if such tube testers exist.
What statement, where?
Believe everything you see on the internet, including what I am now typing.

🙂 FROM A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE!
Actually, I think it was either Mike Savuto or Andy Szabo who made this statement on Audio Circuit years ago in reference to the Acoustat DD Servo Charge amp. I looked but can't find it now. I want to test the tubes in my amps.

Sounds like nonsense to me.
I was going to build an adapter to test 6BN11s by wiring a compactron socket to two 7-pin sockets and selecting 6EW6. I don't see why it wouldn't work. 6BN11 is just 2 6EW6s in one bottle.

Sure they do if they're not too old. Hickok 539C and 752A have them. So do B&K 700, 707 and 747. Also Mercury 1000 and 2000 to name a few.I do not know if such tube testers exist.
Hickok made a compactron adapter, the CA-4. See the ebay listing for example: HICKOK 533A TUBE TESTER come with CA-4 COMPACTRON ADAPTER | eBay
Many tube testers had add on modules to accommodate compactron tubes. Tubes are the same, just a different base. For example a 6DN7 which was a vertical sweep amplifier for TV's is absolutely identical to a 6FJ7. One is an 8 pin octal, the other a 12 pin compaction.
Here's a list compiled in 2013:

My new Compactron tester ;-)
Put one of these in my power oscillator. If they fire up my plasma tweeter then they are ok... (quick and dirty tester)
