I burnt two test CD's using NCH Tone Generator software to create and save the tones as WAV files for burning onto CD-ROM.
The first CD contains a 1khz sine wave and works perfectly. The second disc is supposed to be a 1khz square wave.
When I play back the square wave disc on the computer you can hear the tone as it should be. Using another software the waveform shows up as a square wave on the computer. However, when I put that disc into a cd player there is no sound at all. The disc is reading, and showing correct time. But no output.
I connected said player to an external dac and the output was just noise.
I've tried lower amplitude square wave and lower frequency square wave, and still nothing.
What's going on here?

First guess, the second disc is being flagged as 'data' by the CD player.
This is actually a very specific check on a Philips test disc I have, all players should mute the audio if its a data track on the CD, but some don't and you get horrendous full amplitude noise.
What you might have done, I can't say, but its maybe something to go on.

Thanks Mooly. The rise time is very fast so it is quite possible you're right.
I'll try and filter out the highs (I'm only interested in the lower registers) and try it again.

NCH Tone Generator to make the file. CD Burner XP to burn the CD.
The sine wave using the same software works fine.

Try compiling a CD-A (audio) of several tracks with different tones.
Burn the image to CD-R. Check with the computer (properties) to confirm the disc and tracks are of the correct format and type for your CD-Player. If you are not sure then compare it to a pressed CD-A.
Test if all the tracks work in your CD-Player.
You could also add one track that starts with a sine wave and ends with a square wave.

You may download a Test CD from my website vicol audio : support
I made this few years back while starting to work on a DAC and later on Shiga CD transport.
It has a wide range of test signals and can be used to completely evaluate a digital source.
Extract rar file and burn with nero or other burner.

Tibi

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Well I'm not sure why CD-Burner XP is not burning discs correctly. All the settings are correct. So I tried on a whim to burn my square wave with Windows Media Player. Darn thing works fine.
Oddly a music disc I made from CD-Burner does not work either. However the jobs done now.
Thanks for the suggestions.
