Tempered glass or not?

for now im stripping an old buhl overhead for the parts....and there is a sheet of glass on top...how can i tell if its tempered glass or not...i heard that most overheads used tempered glass..i want to make sure...

Most higher end overheads use tempered optical glass. Not regular glass. There IS a difference.

If you take it to a glass shop, they will be able to tell you. They have a device that shoots a laser and determines the type of glass based on how it bounces back.

Cant of searched very hard then cos ive seen that thing in numerous pages from when ive searched stuff, you could always email the manufacturer. Try projector central.

Most of the time it is, after all ohps are a cheap machine and temperd glass as a bed is a waste as its not needed, not unless u plan to sit on it lol. The only part of glass in a ohp that is temperd is the glass that covers the bulb area for protection.

That depends how warm it gets, it may worp, id just use normal glass and the problems solved.

well i will put the lexan in anyways for uv block and add glass in too...will use a temp probe to see how hot it gets..laxan can take quite a bit of heat according to the spec sheets ive seen

Actually I am using lexan. Originally it was just temporary until I could get some glass, but it's holding up well. Seems to attract a lot of dust tho.

ya it does attract a lot of dust...need to make it anti static somehow....what bulb set up you using king? and how far is the lexan from it?

Not sure the exact distance, I just dropped it in place and secured it. I have a 400watt Ushio Pulse Strike lamp that I got from LL.

wow thats pretty close....mine will be a bit farther...are you using xl-10 lexan? with the uv coating?

It doesn't appear to hurt the material. There was only one kind of lexan at HD when I went and I believe it's all the same. There did appear to be a uv resistant side, yes.

Lexan would work just as good as glass... and it won't attract as much dust either (goto GE and download the PDF spec sheet for their Lexan with UV Coating).
