ok, i'm building a box projector as soon as i get the nec 1530v that i won on ebay.
I already have a brand new never used Dukane Starfie 4030 so i was thinking about using the quarz filament 410 watt bulb, reflectors, fresnel, etc. from this high quality overhead.
my question, Tell me the pros and cons of this lighting source, (will i notice a better color temp if i get the sodium ballas and ushio lamps that you guys are using alot? does the quartz filament burn hotter so it will be harder to cooL?
one thing i'm not liking is the heaviness i hear about the magnetic ballast if i go with the one you are using...

the bulb in the OHP will give a yellowish picture and will be hott along with not being all that bright. now you could use the fresnel but it will not be the opimum size for a 15inch lcd so you will not get the brightest image with the small fresnel. the only thing that i would use is the lense i dont know if youres is a doublet or a triplet but iether way it will be "ok" to use for starters. and on the bulb again they do not last that long ... and have a high price for how long they last. with the ballast wieght should really not be a big deal .. unless yer gunna hang the PJ and even then .... just make sure you do a good job hanging it and you should be fine ... but i dont recomend hanging it.
my fresnel from the Dukane starfire 4030 is 12 inches by 12 inches.
so i think that's big enough. (i know most ohp aperatures or 9.5 or so inches but this one is pretty big once you remove the plastic that overhangs... or take out the lense)
but i jut realized the mirror inside the dukane i was gonna salvage might be too small. then again, it works for the large ohp, maybe if the mirror is close it is big enough?

hey, while we are on the subject.
if metal halide is trually that much better, (i do know the differences as i used to run reef aquariums)
but what is in those expensive store bought lcd projectors? those are too small to have a metal halide in them.. like the sharp models you see in the universities... (now i have to admit usually the room has to be real dark to get awesome results.)
i'm just saying the color temperature is maybe not as good at the ushio, but they can be very close, but yes, they do burn out fast, buy i found a replacement lampf for my starfire 4030 for only 7 bucks with shipping.

ya know im not sure but i think there halogon also but ..... again the price plus the how long they last ... suck i mean its up to you as far as halogon vs metal halide goes ...you know the diff MH is brighter lasts alot longer and has a better color to it but cost about 3-4 times a cheap halolon, but lasts 10x as long. ill admit if i didnt find that cheap ballast on ebay and got that retro MH ushio bulb id be useing halogon for a long time. i got my OHP from a college surplus store for $10 and paid $11 for a bulb locally ... bam dun.... just add lcd that costed me $120. i did spend $90 on a sharp qa 1650 that ended up not working right and i got all but my $20 shipping back ... i got it about 95% working but still not good enough to use yet.
cool.
so this ballast runs a regual metal halide? not a sodium one?
what bulb did you order for it? and do you know how much the ballast weighs?
