Hi, I'm just about to buy my first scope to help with building / repairing guitar amps, and I've seen a calibrated Tektronix 2225 advertised for about €180. The guy has also replaced things that are likely to go wrong - presumably electrolytics and so on...
Is it worth going for, or would I be better off waiting until I can get hold of something like a new ds1054z (or similar)? Or even a Hantek?

DSOs are great for single shot captures normally used for debugging digital designs but for amp testing where one looks at a sine wave or the distortion components from a THD analyzer, an analog scope gives a better display.
If you want measurements shown with the waveform, most DSOs will do it. Your choice.

Thanks, hitachi_nut... I actually spotted a Tek TAS220 scope today, which seems to do most things I want...
I have a 2225 and while it is a nice scope it is lacking one feature, the ability to capture. It does go down to 5mv per division which is the main reason i bought it, but recently i have been thinking about picking up a digital scope too. I guess it really depends on what you want it for.
Most of the old analogue scopes are fan-less. They run completely silent. The newer DSO's I tried have fans and they make more noise than I would have expected.

Thanks guys... Basically, I don't think I need that level of resolution. Mainly going to be using it for checking waveforms at various stages through the amp, checking for filtering, clipping (it's for guitar amps, after all), and troubleshooting, should I need to...
I've pulled the trigger on the 220 that I mentioned earlier - it seems to give me what I want, I've got the service manual, and it comes with a bit of a warranty which will cover me for a little while
