So it has a ring of glass or plastic as part of the platter (as seen in the latest pics with the mat removed from the platter) which makes a "window" to the PCB with the drive coils on it. I was wondering if this window area was "open" or not, but I did see a speck of dust go by towards the upper right:

I looked because I remembered this and hadn't heard anything about it, and just saw some online mention of the "new Technics" TT. It was officially announced in January, and it looks a lot like the 1200 with taller feet, and it's even got 1200 in the model number.
According to this article, it uses a "newly designed cordless [SIC] direct-drive motor." Surely the salesman said coreless and the writer heard cordless...
