Not that many right now. I have like 50, but of them 20 I really like. Working on getting more records, if you have any suggestions for particular presses of albums let me know 🙂

That is about how many LPs I started off with, but I now have over a thousand. Be careful, storage can quickly become a problem...

If you see an import copy of an album you like, be sure to pick it up. Import pressings are generally higher quality than American pressings, but there are many exceptions to this.
The absolute best pressings of any album are Japanese or half-speed masters such as Mofi, DCC, or Columbia Master Sound. Unfortunately these are usually crazy expensive.

Here are some suggestions of albums I really like, and that are easily found. I mostly gravitate towards Prog Rock, which is almost one of the hardest genres to collect.

Yes - Close to the Edge
Yes - Fragile
Rush - Signals
Kansas - Song for America
Kansas - Masque
Camel - The Snow Goose
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

Thanks for those recommendations. I've been wanting to hear Signals on LP. Now it looks like it will be next purchase since you mentioned it 🙂. I know it recorded entirely in analog realm. I am guessing Grace Under Pressure was as well? Do you have Permanent Waves Rush album? Oh my it's so good. How about 2112?

I just found this thread. Who would have thought that the old turntable I got new for under $100 back in about 1978 when a chain store (maybe Service Merchandise or Luria's) was going out of business would have stood the test of time.

Mine has followed me around for 40 years and 1200 miles. Still works great and carries the second cartridge, an ADC, after a cat killed the first one and took out the record by jumping on to the spinning platter. I have a brand new M97xE still in the box that I got from Parts Express several years ago as a back up.

I never thought about modding or upgrading it, but maybe......or maybe not, Iv'e grown used to it after 40 years of use.

I am impressed most with Brothers in Arms LP

An excellent well recorded album.

I mostly gravitate towards Prog Rock, which is almost one of the hardest genres to collect.

I still have most of the prog that I bought new when it came out, maybe 600 albums.....they have never been spun on any other TT.

That is so very cool 🙂 That a lot of people like the same music here, have hundreds of albums, and that you only played them on the same turntable I have 🙂. If you ever see AT1100E cart/stylus for cheap , grab it and try it 🙂. It's what I am using and to me sounds better than my digital copies of same album. I need to buy more cartridges to try out.. What do you guys suggest I buy next?

Pre-made bases are available on ebay, or a local carpenter can make one for you.
Here are some templates.
Technics SP10 - Manual - Professional Direct-Drive Turntable Motor Unit - Vinyl Engine

To mount the arm, use the template for that arm, which specifies a certain distance
from the turntable's spindle to the axis of the arm's horizontal pivot. Drill the
appropriate size hole at some point on that circle so the arm has plenty of clearance
all around, and so the cue can raise the arm throughout the normal playing region.

It's much easier than building an amplifier, and it won't blow up on you.

Hi Rayma,

Thanks for the info. I might have to investigate this further.

I also would suggest also some type of record cleaning regiment. I picked up a
squeaky clean ( Squeaky Clean Vinyl MK-III RCM 3D Printed Record Cleaner )

a few months ago and prefer it to the similarly priced Spin Clean.

That is an excellent suggestion, a vacuum type record cleaner is a better sound quality improvement than any turntable mod. It is amazing how much of a difference one makes, even on new records.

Dennis - Taking on an SP-10 project is not as difficult as it seems. All the pieces are available, just separately. Also, it's most likely going to cost more than you estimate.

That said, it's completely and totally worth whatever you end up spending on it. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Technics SL-D2

I found a technics sl-d2 in the trash and cleaned it up replaced the cords and lubed it up. I was wondering if it is possible to modify it so it can auto repeat like the D3. I remember that the 1200 had some inner adjustment that could be made to auto repeat or auto return.
