I have a Technics SL-DL1. Replacing the standard Technics cartridge with the low-end Grado at the time (circa '88) totally transformed my system into something I could enjoy again.
10er:
I have an SL-6. Presently in storage, but I love it and plan to take it out and use it as my primary turntable.
I had a similar problem-the landing point.
In the back of the SL-6, there is a screw near the top, a couple of inches from the hinge of the dust cover. It looks like it would be a chassis adjustment screw of some sort, but it is not.
That screw adjusts the landing point of the arm at the beginning of the record. I suggest you adjust that-I'll bet that is your problem.
