Technics SB6000 - tweeter issue

Greetings,

I have an issue with one of the tweeters,
the problem is that tweeter activates somewhere between level 9 and level 10.

I have checked the board and found power resistors which were cracked and replaced them, but still no luck.

Can someone help with what should I check next?

Well, there may be cracks somewhere in connections, cables, switches, boards and so on... So check e.g. the switch itself (for good/bad contacts), the cables (for feedthrough) and (renew!) all soldered connections.

The service manual is available on HiFIengine.com. You can download it after free registration.

Good luck!

I've repaired some in the late eighties: the wires from the solderering eyes to the cone can have become brittle and weak. Replacement is doable but risky. Maybe I've still two on a shelf in my shack somewhere (3 and 5 ohms resp), but I'm not sure...
Consider replacing them with more up to date tweeters.

Just looked at the service manual myself and it seems that the SB-6000 has a Potentiometer in the Tweeter branch. That one could be broken or may need contact cleaning. How this cleaning could be done in the particular case I don't know, but I doubt that a replacement is available. Alternatively, fixed resistors reflecting your tonal preference could be soldered in place of the Pot. Although the simple Pot variability would be lost that way, the guys would play....

Please share your progress and findings! We'll try to help you make these speakers work again!

Hello "MarsBravo",
...Consider replacing them with more up to date tweeters...
while I agree with your proposal for the case "if all else fails", we should also clearly state that new/different Tweeters mean new Tweeter crossovers. Getting this developed is not really a trivial task (especially if one wants the former tonalty back).

The current description suggests to me that there is probably a contact issue in the Tweeter Pot. And yes, I may be wrong 😉
