If the player is otherwise OK and it was a duff motor all along, then the platter height adjustment should be do-able by trial and error.
(problems come when several things are marginal, a slightly weak motor, a less than perfect pickup, misalignment etc... all can still give a working player but then each item becomes super critical)

Hey, cheer up on your work, i just replaced a motor on a SL-PJ28 that behaved exactly like yours, since i didn't have a exact equal motor just dropped in a smaller one from the tray of a cdrom drive and is working just fine, just had to make some modifications in order to screw the motor in place
