Technical advice needed on a Sanyo DAD-8

Hi Everyone,

Hope anyone can help me out.

Got my hands on a nice vintage Sanyo DAD-8 cd player from 1983.
I did manage to get power on all the components by resoldering and remplacing some parts, so there is lite and the cd is spinning again.

Only the device can't read the cd so I think the laser is out of focus.

I see the potention meters but I don't know what values should be on them.

Can anyone help me completing my restoration project?

You really need a scope and circuit...
What did you replace ?
When the drawer closes WITHOUT a disc in place can you see the lens move up/down a few times. During this operation the laser should emit light.

Hi Mooly,

I changed a few dry elco's and some parts that where loose on the main powerboard. I could've solderd them back but remplace them all instead. It sure brought back the power in this player.

About the laser, yes it is moving in and out and give light.

The cd spins also but the display says de-rr

Hmmm... without putting a scope on it to see the RF signal coming off the disc (in those few seconds it spins up) then it's all guess work.

If the lens is clean you could (at your own risk... or rather the lasers 🙂) try slightly turning up the laser power (pot on the pickup).
That's a real bodge job though but it might prove something if it then read a disc. Is the pickup clean generally... internal contamination is a real possibility after all these years.

Are you 100% sure any pots on the main board are untouched and have never been altered ? Setup of some (if it has them) is very critical such as E-F balance and PLL lock and offsets.

I suspect it's not worth throwing money at hoping a new pickup will fix it unless you can do tests and be sure everything else is OK. I seem remember some early Sanyos had a "diffraction grating" adjustment on the pickup which on any machine is an absolute nightmare to adjust... you would never do it without the correct tools and equipment.
