If it munches tape its the pickup driver
If it just stops , its the capstan pinch roller on the bottom.

No. It's a dual capstan close loop drive cassette deck. It was the take up spool drive motor and a belt or two. I trusted them. The deck now works per specs

Teac V5000 has one motor, in PLAY for driving the take up reel, and in FAST FORWARD or REWIND for driving the take up or supply reel.
Reel drive uses one motor.
Did FF or REW work without shutting off?

Like Rayma says, do the mechanical stuff first, before going deeper.
Teac decks were well made, but an old set is an old set.
And you may not know how carefully it was used.
Take care, read up before going deeper than a mechanical service.
Get the schematic as well if needed.
Of course, you will need meters, and other tools, I have no idea of what you have as tools, or what kind of engineer you are...
Its not that old after all. It's a 2002 year model. The machine arrived from ebay well packed and in excellent external condition. The heads are clean and show no signs of abrasion. MAchine looked like brand new. The FF motor was bad. I measured it with a multi meter. It showed 0 V when the shut down occured, I thought it was the controller PCB. I didint know it was the motor itself. The repair lab told me it was the motor and a belt and they have the parts in stock. They quoted the price and waited for my approval. which I gave. Its a big repair lab. I am happy with their service. Cassette deck works flawlessly since.
I am a BSME or aerospace design engineer. (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering). Not an electrical engineer, though I know to read schematics and other stuff. But I don't have the real expertise of a true Audio equipment technician.

Good that it is repaired, this is indeed a high end cassette deck.
About the motors in the V5000, there are 4 of them:
1 motor for cassette loading
1 motor for mechanism control
1 capstan motor
1 reel motor, for the supply and take up reel
Did the deck shut off in fast forward or reverse winding?
Best regards, 968driver.

It was the reel motor. It shut off during play. When the shut off occured, nothing would work. I had to turn the deck off, wait a few secs then turn it on again, with the power button. After opening its cover I found it's a very sturdy and well built machine. Then the same shut off would occur again. It would eject the tape from the cassete slightly, the sensor would detect it and shut off the drive mechanism. I dont have the expertise of an electronics repair technician. So the lab fixed it, but for a price.
