PSU is definitely the key to audio nirvana. I have a saying 'No matter how important you think the PSU is, its always more important than you think'. Yeah ultra-cheap caps are just fine for this application - low ESR is totally wasted by the length of wires needed.
On Taobao the 3,300uF/10V I use are 75rmb (guessing around $12) for a bag of 250.

wow..that's freakin cheap!.
i'll try it but not so soon..i already bought too many CDs this month

At least you have your priorities right - spend more on music than on kit 😛
i actually pointing to XMOS USB to I2S and PCM5102 chips 😛 .but too bad i was going way too wild on buying CDs this month

Ah new-fangled modern chips, they're a bit expensive compared to the old classics here. Too new to get recycled 😀

i still doubt if that PCM5102 could beat the sounds of TDA series..if i only buy the XMOS, i could play DSD/DXD but the sound spectrum should be limited to 20~20kHz

or i'm wrong?
ah..i want to say this to OP but i keeps forgetting!
in my opinion, TDA1545 was the closest to TDA1541A (without S) compared to TDA1543.so keep it!.or you might want to parallel some like what i did.i found paralleling TDA1545 improve the sound 🙂
I'm not yet convinced that DSD has anything much to offer - all the CDs I have which have been recorded with DSD have lousy HF - spitty sibilance on voices for example, unclear high piano notes. DXD could be fine though. I doubt very much PCM5102 would achieve the dynamics of any TDA DAC - caps across its supply (charge pump derived) would help though.
More capacitance always sounds better to me, overkill or not. Currently my DAC has close to half a farad of decoupling (on the active stages, about 20,000uF on the DAC chips) and the bass sounds truly awesome 🙂 My amp hasn't caught up yet though, still has only about 50,000uF....😛 Long overdue for upgrading. Good job caps are cheap here 😀
Some here in France use tweaked Philips723 with TDA1545 and 1 farad saving caps used as filter ripple between the TDA and Powersupply (but after a 78005 reg) but with a SEPC for ref and 5V near the TDA1545.
Same are used for active stage after with or without double battery (phantom supply) with one Farad on each rail and around 100 MKP before the active bufer stage.... Bass are awsome... like Wolfson DAC or ESS9023 but with the better beautifull treble of these Philips dac chip.
Hé Abraxilato, do you start the competition of inexpensive awsome sounding DAC like Subbu, and others with your own design .... I support you if less 150/200 dollars with PCB and BOM....
I'm not into competition but I am sure the BOM for my current design is considerably below $150....😛

Well, "competition" is my sens of humour, sure it's not, it's our hobbies first and I find fantastic than people with great knowledge share it.
Do you remind the time when a Rega Planar 3 was less than 100 euros ? 😉
No, that must have been before the euro was invented. My first TT was a Planar2 - I later upgraded to the 3. I can't remember exactly how much I paid for the -2, might have been around 100UKP, this was 1979.
Me too, it was in 1986: a Planar 3 in Francs (euros was for modern traduction)...
You are old green Duck !

I worked the first summer holidays of my university course and saved up enough for my very first hi-fi separates system 🙂
My current estimate btw for the BOM cost of the most basic form of my Ozone DAC would be around $30. Interesting?

OMG Zombies!
Zombie Thread!
Don't know if you noticed, but the OP was 2002! 😱
So maartentje, keep the 1545 and upgrade the surrounding circuitry.

Hey 'Braxi, is there a tread or something for your Ozone DAC besides:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/blogs/abraxalito/1061-introducing-ozone-dac-platform.html
diyAudio - DAC design and development
Almost all of my music (and for the foreseeable future) is .flac ripped from regular CD. Definitely want to build one of your DACs (what's perfect for 44.1/16?) as I've got a TDA1545 just pining to sing
Cheers,
Jeff

No, no thread besides what's already on my blog. And its not a done and dusted design quite yet, only various bits have been firmed up. What do you think having a thread would add to the blog postings?- if there's enough interest I'd be content to start one.

Sure I am. Maybe it costs me more because you work in the world of electronic in China. For the simple particular individual, the cost of BOM are more expensive (minimal fee, transport and so on).
But what about the PCB... it's a very important part of a DAC ?
Can tell you after building what I'm thinking about it in relation to others with the limitation of my equipment of course. PM if you want; I follow some of yourthreads but with any shematics my skill is not at the level to abstract it.😱
