After building some solid state amps I'd like build a tube amp. I currently use a Neurochrome LM3886dr amp which I'm very happy with. In combination with my current phono pre there's sufficient gain. Would it be a smart idea to start my tube experience with a phono stage? I think it would be cheaper and / or easier to build than an output stage.
Will i get to experience "tube sound" using a tube phono stage with a solid state amp?
Another reason why I want to build a tube phono stage is because i stumbled upon Tavish Design last night and I absolutely love the look of the amps 😀
A search of this forum didn't turn up a whole lot of results. Can anyone comment on the building experience, the sound, the circuit of the classic and the vintage amp?
Also I'm having a bit of a hard time finding out what the difference between classic and vintage would be - except for the tubes of course. Any comments on that?
Thanks!
Michi

I've built two of the Tavish "Vintage" pre-amps. I love the sound.
I built the complete kit and then bought just the board for my second one.
Great support from Scott at Tavish.
good luck

thanks! may i ask why you choose the vintage over the classic?
also, which amplifier do you use with the tavish phono stage?

One of my Tavish pre-amps is connected to a Tubelab SPP. My son has the other one and it is connected to a Tubelab SSE. It sounds great with either amp.
Currently I'm using the MM input, but I thinking of trying a moving coil cartridge in the future.
I can't remember why I chose the vintage. I guess because I thought it would sound better.

Sounds good 🙂
Anyone use a tube phono pre with a solid state power amp?

I use a home-brewed 834p with SS amplification with great results.
For me, the tube pre / SS amp combo is the best of all worlds. The control and detail of SS with some euphonic / pleasurable touch from the tubes.
I’m in the process of building a tube amp for reference but my hunch is that I will stick to SS, if only just for practical or ecological reasons. From what I understand the sound will be more comparable than the difference between tube and ss preamplification.
PS out of the Tavish line I love the versatility of the Adagio, their MM / MC offering with front panel switching.

Although it seems to not come as a kit and is on waitlist.

you may get a bit of tube sound softness.
I am using a tube preamp to drive the tone stack and SS power amp.
However most of the tube sound comes from the power output stage of a tube amp interacting with the speaker

Scott of Tavish design has been very quick to respond to my email. According to him the Vintage and Classic amps are very similar so the choice really seems to depend on tube preference. Since this would be my first tube project I really don't have a preference. The 6sl7 tubes are bigger, the 5751 tubes seem to be cheaper 🙂. Any advice on choosing between those tubes?
