You have not specified what the impedance and O/P level of the playback head are. The characteristics of the head have an enormous influence on what the "best" preamp circuitry will be.

0dB recording level gives 2,2mV RMS output. +3dB should result in a 2,0V RMS preamp output. I measured 100 ohm coil resistance.
