i am using a Carver C1 preamp as a phono pre, sending the signal out through the tape out to a passive pre then on to the power amp. Unusual setup, I know. Looking at the schematic there is nothing between the phono stage and the tape out but 2.2K resistors.
Since I am using a passive pre I need every bit of signal gain I can get. The low signal is compounded by my low output MM cartridge. The 2.2K resistors on the output of the tape out, could changing the resistors to lower value increase gain? I am not talking about resistors in the phono stage but rather right at the end of the tape out. Can I remove them? What is their function?

What's the resistance value and configuration of the attenuator in your passive pre?
If the ratio between it and 2.2k is fairly large, you're not going to achieve much by lowering their value or removing the 2.2k resistors.
Series resistors on the outputs of stages are common. They serve to decouple capacitive loads and prevent short-circuiting the outputs during connecting/disconnecting of interconnect cables....which might possibly damage them.
Generally though, they're not valued quite as high as 2.2k. I believe you could reduce those by a factor of ten and be just fine.

25K pot in the preamp. Sounds like changing those resistors won't change much. But it was a good to fnd out what they do.
