Tannoy System 15 DMT II

Most likely he had two pair of 38xx drivers and decided to cannibalize or rebuilt one pair and converted them into woofers so he could mimic a 215.

I think I read somewhere on the Group that essentially the additional woofer in the 215 was just that…a 38xx that had no compression driver installed and a dust cap added to that woofer.

Thanks guys... It's seem that cooky or cookyxxxx is no more in the panel's members..... If i wrote is nick name correctly ?????

And i do not understand this cooky guy... Why did he build a 215 MDT without tweeters ????? Does his woofer became FULL range ?????

And finally, it does'nt matter to me if the tweeter is not in the center of the woofer... Maybe i can find a tweeter that have the same close caracteristics than the original... --- By the way, the owner ask $ 450 canadien dollars... They are in very good condition do.... (sorry, i usally worit in french)...
The 215 uses two 15 inch drivers per speaker. Only one of the two drivers has got the tweeter. (Tannoy named the 3833 without the tweeter 3834 and added a dustcap)

"Cooky" had two pairs of 3833 drivers and removed the tweeters of one pair to make a pair of 215's

Since we already have drivers with tweeter we would love to have a extra pair without tweeters.
And then make our own 215's

@Serge

I think at some point someone will say it…maybe reach out to Lockwood?

http://www.lockwoodaudio.co.uk/

They are a very reputable long established British Tannnoy specialist that served the studio community for years…and enthusiasts I take it.

Perhaps they may have parts and/or could give you information about whether or not there are high frequency units from other Tannoy that can be substituted.

@chromenuts

How are you?
I was wandering if you could do me a favor. Could you meassure your speakers for me?
I would like to build the speakers very close to original. Only in a domestic version. (some fancy veneer on them )
I attached a little sketch with some question marks.

Cheers!

I did a quick sketch of what I have in mind.
So nothing is to scale etc.
I was thinking, maybe sand down the cabinets and give them a dark stain like tannoy uses in their prestige series. Then paint driver frames gold.

Maybe try to remove the ornaments on the cabinets.

I know going this route can lead to some "problems" sound wise. Diffractions etc etc etc.
Since the DMT's where used in studios where they where build into walls, hung from the ceiling or placed on whatever was useful, I think I can get away with building them in a cabinet.

And I will not be using them for critical listening anyway.
These will be used for day to day "normal" use.
Background to high volume dancing in the living room. But still delivering a very good quality of sound.

I find myself in the strange position that I do not take the time anymore to sit and listen/analysing the sound. I'm more feeling/enjoying the music.
And caring less about..is the image spot on etc

(But maybe that's the point of good music/sound?)

Going to be a fun project.
I ditched this idea.
Since i need to build boxes (of almost the same size as the dmt's) to fit inside of the furniture, i can make it easier on myself and just put some nice veneer on them.

Hi Zoef

I’m afraid I can only help slightly.

I can’t remove the drivers to measure the actual cutout hole for them.

I was able to measure with calipers the distance between the vent holes and to the edges of the cabinet.

I have not had my DMT speakers open at all yet because I am playing with 3149 drivers I bought without boxes or crossovers for now.

From what I’ve read, there is a lump of mastic that is placed between the back of the driver magnet and the bracing (red in pic) to provide better coupling.

Yes, I read that also . I think it was the hilberink site.
To be honest, I don't think I will go that far.

The bracing I show here is of the legacy Arden's
To my eyes it looks a bit better than the bracing of the DMT.
And I think construction will be a bit easier haha.

What's your plan with the3149?
