Hi everyone.
I have a passive home studio system with a pair of older (well maintained) tannoy pbm 8, along with an equally well maintained pair of yamaha ns 10, and i’m trying to find the most appropriate upgrade on the tannoy pair.
Passive, 8’’ woofers, similar frequency response and not far more expensive. And of course i would prefer older used stuff. Not necessarily studio grade. Just different and maybe better than the pbm 8.
Any suggestions?
I guess older yamaha passives 8’’ must be pretty similar to the ns 10 (even if they are one of a kind in a way…).
Dynaudio passives are the first that come to mind. But i guess there are more, maybe cheaper and maybe better.
Thanks.

Do your tannoy woofers need a refoam? If so it maybe possible to measure the cone and frame dimensions to try and find a suitable replacement. Maybe some suppliers already have a PBM8 Re foam kit, certainly worth a web search.
Alternatively are you asking what would be a suitable 8" replacement driver. In that case you will have to consider the enclosure type sealed or ported, cabinet dimensions, Bass driver cabinet cut out hole size, plus original sensitivity to make sure you have at least a sensible match.

Actually i refoamed them 4 years ago. Practically they are in very good shape.
What I’m asking is for suggestions on a different (or better) pair of monitors. I’m not so much into speakers-monitors so some people maybe able to help.
Max 8’’, passive, close to pbm freq response and dimensions, different to ns 10, max 300 euros used.

OK, personally that does seem like a tough call for 300 Euros used.
Maybe some tannoy Sensys DC6 might work, if you like what the tannoy gives you, but its not a 8 inch driver. I don't have much exposure to the European major makers from Germany, France, Sweden etc. but there must be something there that fits the requirement.
Building a new DIY speaker with 8 inch driver would be tricky for 300 euros I think. here are some possible examples but you are looking above 300 euros I would guess after driver purchase, crossover components and the material needed to build the cabinets and then finish them to a suitable level.
This is a much larger 8 Inch cabinet but you could consider the dimension of this and work out what it would cost to build.

Also have a look at Troels Gravesen website for a design that meets your requirements?
Maybe

or
http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Discovery-81.htm
or this which is a larger Seas Based design,

I am sure other will chip in their thoughts. Their must be several Klang and Tong, or other euro websites that have 8 inch builds

Thanks for the suggestions. To be honest if i were to go the diy route i would just use the same cabinets and use better matching woofers and tweeters. But i wonder if it's worth it?
I can find dynaudio woofers and vifa tweeters for about 300-350 euros all together. The frequency curve of the pbm 8s can be found in the forum.
