This morning I took the plunge and removed the magnet to see what was really going on. The worst came true, the voice coil is shorted and needs to be fixed.
What do you recommend now? Should I get a recone kit or somehow try to fix the coil? Is there any difference between Tannoy or Lockwood recone kits? Any recommendations?
Thanks

I was looking for another thread when I saw this.
I think anyone who has a re cone kit is your first stop as you want to get these beauties working again. I am not an expert but your image looks like the cardboard former has started to split, or separate. I do not know if that would be due to old age, dampness, or the additional heat from a shorted coil.
As others have suggested lockwood (UK) or Cathy (USA). I think the replacement cones with slightly more modern materials and glues will give you a better speaker able to take some more power and function for many more years. If the cost for one is affordable it might be worth taking the hit and having both drivers re coned. It would certainly help if you ever wanted to sell them in the future.
As to re cone kits and which one is better, I haven't a clue, although I would assume that the all the parts come from Tannoy. If I am wrong in my assumption people will point out the error.
I hope your get them working again.

Help please, advice needed, I have a pair of Tannoy 15”Golds, one (many years ago) developed a rattle under the dust cover, worried that whatever was loose may cause damage I stopped using them. I would like to know the best way of getting access to remove what’s causing the rattle. The choice seems to be removing the dust cover or the magnet. Do you have any advice on removing the magnet, is it easy? I don’t want to risk damaging the cone by removing the dust cover. Thanks
Yes Cathy is probably your best bet as I assume it would be cheaper to send it to Tampa Fla than to London UK.
Although I know Lockwood can do just a recoil rather than a full recone and I do not know if that is an option with Speaker Exchange (The Speaker Exchange - Speaker repair, replacement, recone, refoam, parts and diy kits.).
There is another reliable (to the best of my knowledge) Tannoy specialist in Australia whose name escapes me right now but I suppose postage would be silly.
Once reconed/recoiled it will take a LOT more power as the limiting factor is not the voice coil but the cardboard former and the glue which keeps the coil on the former.
Roger Lockwood (may he rest in peace) referred to those as 'dub coils'. Tannoy were and are popular with reggae artists and their heavy, heavy bass and he did a lot of recoiling for those guys.
Either way I suggest you have both done if you go with that option.
FYI, I just got a pair of Tannoy HPD 315s back from being serviced by The Speaker Exchange and can recommend them. Their turnaround time is not instant but the drivers sound marvelous, they were able to fit new voice coils, spiders, and foam surrounds while retaining the original cones.
