Hello Tannoy gurus!
A question for those who know the HPD cones:
As I am about to replace the HPD foam surrounds and I have two questions:
1. The ribs on the HPD cone are separating from the cone edge (where it angles back). See photo. There you can see the separation at the edge. The foam dried up and the ribs have separated. What adhesive do you recommend?
2. Is there a hard surround for the HPD 385? I will use them for mids and midbass only (above 100hz), seems like cloth would be better for this?
Thank you, you Tannoy gurus!

Gera,
1.) Same type of glue for gluing the surround - https://www.ebay.com/itm/1627302021...261YTR&hash=item25e379d432:g:O4AAAOSwIjZmTb60
2.) Try writing to the same seller that is selling the glue. You don't lose much bass using the hard-edge surround.

Vt4c, I got a response for Lockwood and they do sell the hard surrounds separately. At the same time, Mainly Tannoy responded from your eBay link stating they do NOT sell the hard surrounds claiming that it is not a good idea and will ruin the sound. They only offer the foam surrounds.
So, has anyone tried the hard surrounds?
I have no cabinets yet so I have the flexibility to go with either option, need some guidance as to which is better and for what.
Thanks.

Gera,
Good to know Lockwood still sells the hard-edge surround. You may get the correct glue from Lockwood too.
I've done both the re-coned of the HPD385 with hard-edge surround (from Lockwood) as well as replacing the foam surround with hard-edge surround (from Lockwood) on a couple of HPD385 drivers; I honestly do not think it ruined the sound any bit. What I could detect is the mid and lower mid response is much better. Bass is much tighter. This is a comparison done before and after the change using the same cabinet and same system set-up in the same listening venue.
The biggest advantage of replacing with the hard-edge surround apart from the above is it will last almost forever (in comparison with having the foam surround). I can continue to enjoy music without worrying about issue with the surround any more... 🙂
