Yes, another tangband implementation...

Yesterday, I started building Cyburg's (Berndt Burghard) Needles (link ) and now, they're finished. The woodwork, that is.

A few pictures:

So far, I'm still figuring out exactly how much stuffing I need and how to distribute it along the t-line. I think they sound pretty good if you take into account the cost of the total system.

I used the notch filter Berndt recommends but I'm not so sure this is the best filter one could design. Although the speakers sound nice, they may be a touch "warm". As someone noted earlier, piano music sounds great on these. Bass is astounding. Not much, but the bass that's there is rock-tight. They're a little high-shy but the drivers aren;t fully broken in so this might change too.

In the end, I'm pretty happy with the quality/cost and the quality/time-invested !

If I have time I'll try to post some measurements (have to get my mic calirated).

Matjans, they look pretty good and I imagine they could look great in a good finish. 😉

How about adding a small tweeter in a pod or box on top to help with the highs? I put some on my Buschhorns and they really improved the sense of air and liveliness in the sound. I have a feeling that most 'full range' drivers drivers below a certain price require a little help in the highs.

@matjans:

Nice Needles!

I would recommend to damp the lines until behind the driver, this might reduce the "warmness" of the sound a little bit.
As far as the heights are concerned:
If you look at the frequency plots of the Needle you will see that the heights of the W3-871S are against your experience even a little overrepresented on axis, normally I recommend to place the Speakers parallel and not turned in.

So: Either your drivers are really not fully broken in, or "Welcome to the world of natural heights!". 😀

Keep informing about your further experience with the Needles,

nice greetings, Berndt
