Aside from the gordian knot of WAF - I long ago realized that stable domestic tranquility was far more valuable than the moving target of audio nirvana - I think Steve is on to something with regards to combination of placement, axis orientation and acoustic properties. Sooner or later the room will dominate. Even a modest amount of treatment at critical initial reflection points can help quite a bit at the higher frequencies.

When you say bright, at what sort of frequency are we talking about? Are female vocals glassy, sibilant or thin?
