I am trying to figure out the design that i am going to use when i build my box for my four door tahoe. I want to make a box that covers the hole rear space behind the rear seat and is just tall enough to mount the sub woofer in. I am sorry but i can't get any deminsions right now cause it is in the shop. Any suggestions would be great. Oh by the way i am using to 10s with a 400 watt amp. what else do i need to know to design this thing.

subwoofer design for tahoe truck 4 door

:smash: if u want good bass, a down firing design will help you get about 1.5 - 3 db. if u want sq applications then i suggest u go sealed with a qtc of .707 alignment. u want it loud then go ported... sql application for a ported enclosure is possible with a tuning of 30-35 hertz. box size varies... i have to know what type of sub u r using. n e ways.... post n i'll get back to ya... :smash:

sorry it took so long to reply
I have done alot of planning
heres what i have in mind.

vehicle:
1999
chevy
tahoe
four door
LT trim package.

Head unit:
Kenwood 422

What i have for stereo:
Infinity kappa 60.5i component set fornt speakers
Infinity Kappa 62.5ci coaxail set- rear speakers
Kicker Solo Baric 12 inch L5
Hifonics zues zx6400- for the speakers 4x75 rms i think
Alpine V-12 pro mvr? 1005- sub amp- i think it is a 150x2

both amps are into 4 ohms

four gauge power wire and adding a second battery

So now for the ideas from the pro(yall)
what do you think about what i have choosen and what ideas for sub box size and type
any comments welcome adn i am sure will help in some way cause i am new and trying to learn
thanks

first of all ur head unit is good, mid n highs r great! the thing u need now is a cross over or dsp. ( which is optional! ) that will help u fine tune ur system. when u do that and IF u do it, i recomend u use a classical cd. for ur box... hmmm... :whazzat: if u like to b really loud i'd go ported. by the way... r u using 2 12 inch solo l5's? if u go ported n u want an awesome system which u have already... i'd go with a tuning of 34-37 hertz. ( LIVIN LOUD ) the problem with ported ... box may get huge... but don't worry! just give me the dimensions for the back of the truck n i will design the enclosure. regardless if it's big, moderate, or small... i can design a ported box that will no less impress you! 😉
but the enclosure will depend on you. i have to ask... what do u listen to? that will help in a way.... oh... when u wire the amps, the fuse should not be more that 12 inches away from the battery. n when u make the ground connection from the amp... no longer than 2 ft. that's the best advise i'll give u.:smash:

You want a false floor, yes? Assuming you can cut worth a darn with a jigsaw this should be no problem, and if you can clear the woofer's motor, you should have at least a couple cubic feet to work with...almost always plenty for a car sub. This should be cake.

I think that a active crossover and kick panels will come next summer or when i get some more money.

I am using one 12 inch solo baric L5. I measure the space that I want to take up adn a box that is 24 inches wide by 24 inches long by 13.5 inches tall would be as big of box as i really want to put in the back. I think that this enough room, I think, for this one sub. I think that the ported box is the way to go because it is more efficant with less power, correct? The only thing that i am worried about is that the bass won't be tight, think thats the word, or crisp. Will the a tuning of 34-37 hertz make good loud bass that is crisp or has a good punch.

I listen to all types of music not really set on a particular type.

If that's the case, then you could fit ~4x12" (approx. area of 1.5-2 x 18") in that space.

Cars have a lovely feature called cabin gain that makes the rolloff of a sealed box almost nil in some cases. Do a bit of research - you may not need to worry about porting the box(es) at all.

I am going to have to see what kicker says. my freind said that they put these in bandpass boxes in boats all the time but i think that will muffle the hit of the woofer. A sealed box sure would make construction alot easier.

Stocker could you explain what you mean by then you could fit ~4x12" (approx. area of 1.5-2 x 18") in that space
please humor me i am new at this.

Ok well here are the results that winisp gave me. This is the first time that i have used the program so please tell me if i messed something up. Also if some one else would like to design a box for me i would like it alot.
Want a vented box with a rectangular port. About the same size as the the one in the results.

please some body help need the box desighn badly.

also does it matter where the xover for the kappa speakers are located. like near the speaker or can it be on my amp rack under the back seat?

Again in desperate need of help somebody please lend a hand.

In a car, put crossovers wherever they fit and/or look nice.

A pair of drivers usually will have a bit more surface area than 'the next size' larger, depending on the driver, as much as the next size up after that even. So a pair of 8s is at least as much cone area as a 10, maybe approaching a 12. You can look at your thiele-small parameters and do calculations for yourself based on the sd number, which is cone area.

So four 12" subs might have around the same amount of cone area compressing your air as 1-2 18" subs (or more, depending). As you can imagine, this is enough to take your breath away -literally.

For myself, I usually don't turn it up much, but in my car a single 10" with a "measly" 300W to it is enough to give a nice back massage using the chair, shake the mirrors out of place, and distort your voice if you are silly enough to think you can be heard over the bass. Four 12s will rock your world and make you deaf before your next birthday, if you want.
