Hello.
I have some air-core gauges from a modern dashboard. I want to use 1 of them to build a tachometer for my 3cylinder car (it has a coil and a distributor).
From what i serched a good idee is to use a cs8190 but i cant buy it in my contry.
Is there any way to use a lm2917 or something more common and use this gauge.
Or could i do this with a pic mcu???
regards

You can use a pic with two pwm outputs in quadrature...that is sort of what the cs8190 does in a linear way.
I found the CS8190 chip in US and Canada Digi-Key but when I try to switch to Romania it kicks me back to the US site.

From a glance at the Wikipedia entry, air-core gauges are difficult to drive directly. There's probably some demented way to do it with a couple of quad op-amps, but when you're talking frequency in to frequency out, a micro sounds like a more efficient solution. And someone has probably already written the code if you can find it. Here's a discussion I found by searching for air-core gauge avr tach, since Atmel's chips happen to have dirt-cheap ISP available.

Maybe you can find a scrapped dash with the driver IC on it and use that?
