Hi everyone,
I've been reading these forums for some time now and have finally decided to build something myself. So I started looking into building a portable boombox.
I was thinking about using a ta2020 chip as the basis for my amplifier selection as it is energy efficient. But could I get away with a amplifier that has a higher quality of sound and not suffer too much from the loss of efficiency?

These speakers aren't very efficient, but at such a small size >85db is going to cost a lot i think...?
And powering the setup off a 12v 7ah sla type battery. I don't know much about operating the amplifier from the battery, as I've read the battery is not a perfect power supply as it may generate noise.
All suggestions about the power supply or any other part of the project are welcome.

Sound quality of a TA2020 amp is pretty good. (Much better than you'd find in most boomboxes).
You'll only get about 10 Watts at 8 Ohms though (10 distorted watts). You should use a higher efficiency driver (also 4 Ohms) if you want to get loud with any amp @on 12v. (Maybe something like this)
I hope this helps

I think the newer chips from TI are better than Tripath TA2020. Look at TPA3116D2 thread. Amp is super efficient and sounds very good. Probably best board is the Yuan Jing "blue/black" board designed by diyAudio member Danzz. It costs $20. 50watts/ch 0.01% THD below 40watts.

Even at 12v, it will sound better than ta2020 everything else being equal and I believe efficiency is 90% plus and lower quiescent current. But really for a boom box sound quality is not going to matter as much.
how big is this boombox? if it doesn't have to be super slim, maybe do a open back with a pair of 8" full range? Something like Betsy will give you better bass and with its 92db sensitivity you only need a few watts to get the party going.
If you are going to make it a boombox you might want try the single speaker stereo (SSS).
